Ethics, Literature, and Theory

Do the rich descriptions and narrative shapings of literature provide a valuable resource for readers, writers, philosophers, and everyday people to imagine and confront the ultimate questions of life? Do the human activities of storytelling and complex moral decision-making have a deep connection? What are the moral responsibilities of the artist, critic, and reader? What can religious perspectives--from Catholic to Protestant to Mormon--contribute to literary criticism? Thirty well known contributors reflect on these questions, including iterary theorists Marshall Gregory, James Phelan, and Wayne Booth; philosophers Martha Nussbaum, Richard Hart, and Nina Rosenstand; and authors John Updike, Charles Johnson, Flannery O'Connor, and Bernard Malamud. Divided into four sections, with introductory matter and questions for discussion, this accessible anthology represents the most crucial work today exploring the interdisciplinary connections between literature, religion and philosophy.

For over a decade, Professor Han made pilgrimages to well-known literary destinations while attending annual John Steinbeck conferences in Japan. Certainty and Ambiguity in Global Mystery Fiction

Mystery fiction as a genre renders moral judgments not only about detectives and criminals but also concerning the cultural structures within which these mysteries unfold. In contrast to other volumes which examine morality in crime fiction through the lenses of personal guilt and personal justice, Certainty and Ambiguity in Global Mystery Fiction analyzes the effect of moral imagination on the moral structures implicit in the genre. In recent years, public awareness has attended to the relationship between social structures and justice, and this collection centers on how personal ethics and social ethics are bound together amidst the shifting moral landscapes of mystery fiction. Dystopian fiction captivates us by depicting future worlds at once eerily similar and shockingly foreign to our own. This collection of new essays presents some of the most recent scholarship on a genre whose popularity has surged dramatically since the 1990s. Contributors explore such novels as The Lord of the Flies, The Heart Goes Last, The Giver and The Strain Trilogy as social critique, revealing how they appeal to the same impulse as utopian fiction: the desire for an idealized yet illusory society in which evil is purged and justice prevails.

Index to the 1830 Census of Georgia

This volume contains the names of 52,000 Georgia heads of household, giving for each the county of residence and page number in the census where his name appears. Individuals are indexed alphabetically by surname. A particularly interesting feature of the book is the method of dealing with variant spellings: all names of like sound are grouped together, the variants being arranged in order of the most frequently used spelling, so the researcher is unlikely to miss a name through oversight or carelessness. The compiler of the book, moreover, was a nationally known figure in federal administration programs and a Certified Genealogist.
