Hampi is one of the most beautiful and evocative of all historical sites in south India. Austere yet grandiose, it was established as the seat of the Vijayanagara empire in the mid-14th century, a time when art and architecture flourished. Contemporary chroniclers from Persia, Italy, Portugal and Russia visited the empire during this period and left glowing accounts of a city that was conquered by Sultanate troops in AD 1565, pillaged for six months, and abandoned. Hampi Vijayanagara examines the temples renowned for their florid ornamentation, intricate carvings, magnificent pavilions, stately pillars and a wealth of iconographic and traditional depictions. The book also includes site plans and three-dimensional reconstructions.

New Light on Hampi

This title is devoted to the researches, discoveries, and interpretations of those Indian and international scholars from different disciplines who have been working at the Vijayanagara site over the last 20 years. The volume complements the issue of Marg in the early 1980s, which provided an overview of Hampi-Vijayanagara. This book, however, focuses on specific topics and problems in an attempt to offer new insights into the understanding of this increasingly visited UNESCO World Heritage site.

John Fritz became homeless at age 16. He quit school and became a tramp hitchhiking back and forth across the country. He tried many times to quit drinking and settle down, but he failed each time. His lifestyle resulted in twelve DWI's, and he was checked into treatment centers sixteen times for chemical dependency. He accumulated time in various jails totaling four years of his life, and he spent another four years in the Minnesota penitentiary system. Then he was diagnosed with mental illness. Despite all these stigmas, John somehow turned his life around. His story is laced with funny experiences, colorful characters riding freight trains, and close encounters with death. He was touched by the kindness of strangers again and again. John has an excellent memory and is a natural storyteller. After all of his failures and the things he's been through, readers will be surprised to learn in the final chapter, "Recovery," how John is now living his life.

Provides more than 150 fully solved problems for linear partial differential equations and boundary value problems. Partial Differential Equations: Theory and Completely Solved Problems offers a modern introduction into the theory and applications of linear partial differential equations (PDEs). It is the material for a typical third year university course in PDEs. The material of this textbook has been extensively class tested over a period of 20 years in about 60 separate classes. The book is divided into two parts. Part I contains the Theory part and covers topics such as a classification of second order PDEs, physical and biological derivations of the heat, wave and Laplace equations, separation of variables, Fourier series, D’Alembert’s principle, Sturm-Liouville theory, special functions, Fourier transforms and the method of characteristics. Part II contains more than 150 fully solved problems, which are ranked according to their difficulty. The last two chapters include sample Midterm and Final exams for this course with full solutions.

Excavating Asian History

Although history and archaeology each seek to elucidate the past, both sets of data are incomplete and ambiguous and thus open to multiple readings that invite contradictory interpretations of human activity. This is particularly true when scholars of each field ignore or fail to understand research in the other discipline. Excavating Asian History contains case studies and theoretical articles that show how archaeologists have been investigating historical, social, and economic organizations and that explore the relationship between history and archaeology in the study of pre-modern Asia. These contributions consider biases in both historical and archaeological data that have occasioned riv...
