In this book, John O’Regan examines the role of political economy in the worldwide spread of English and traces the origins and development of the dominance of English to the endless accumulation of capital in a capitalist world-system. O’Regan combines Marxist perspectives of capital accumulation with world-systems analysis, international political economy, and studies of imperialism and empire to present a historical account of the ‘free riding’ of English upon the global capital networks of the capitalist world-system. Relevant disciplinary perspectives on global English are examined in this light, including superdiversity, translanguaging, translingual practice, trans-spatiality,...

Education and the Discourse of Global Neoliberalism

This book investigates neoliberalism in education and explains how it is a complex phenomenon which takes on local characteristics in diverse geopolitical, economic and cultural settings, while retaining a core commitment in all its manifestations to market fundamentalism. Neoliberalism - that set of beliefs and practices which has become the economic orthodoxy of global preference since the 1980s - appears remarkably resilient despite the US financial crisis of 2008 and the subsequent implementation of austerity in the massively indebted nations of the European Union. This book addresses the phenomenon of neoliberalism in education and focuses on school and higher education settings in Irel...

‘Intercultural dialogue’, as a concept and ideology in the European Union, stimulates a rational 21st century society where people can engage in (intercultural) communication on a global scale, and can do so openly and freely in conditions of security and mutual respect. Intercultural dialogue connotes dialogic communication that is peaceful, reconciliatory, and democratic. Yet the term and its accompanying rhetoric belie the intercultural communicative undercurrents and their manifestations that people encounter in their daily lives. The research-informed chapters in this book, which are situated in international contexts, provide more nuanced understandings, and many even challenge thi...

Although much is written about the Irish revolution and Northern Ireland, we know very little about it from the perspective of Irish policemen. This unique memoir recounts the personal experiences of John Regan, an RIC officer from 1909 onwards and the highest ranking Catholic in the RUC until 1948. His often-humorous stories and anecdotes reveal much about the way the police and justice system in Ireland operated, including the carrying out of evictions, dealing with sectarian riots, and the protection of landlords and their agents. Regan also had an extraordinary ability to be present at major incidents, including the Larne gun-running, the Easter Rising, the battle of the Somme, the funeral of Thomas Ashe, the near-mutiny at the Listowel RIC barracks, and at various engagements with the IRA. Furthermore, his experiences as an officer in the RUC shed much-needed light on the internal workings of this force and its relationship with the Catholic population. In his introduction, Joost Augusteijn provides an overview of the position of the RIC and RUC in Irish society in the period.

Based on the commonly held assumption that we now live in a world that is ‘on the move’, with growing opportunities for both real and virtual travel and the blurring of boundaries between previously defined places, societies and cultures, the theme of this book is firmly grounded in the interdisciplinary field of ‘Mobilities’. ‘Mobilities’ deals with the movement of people, objects, capital, information, ideas and cultures on varying scales, and across a variety of borders, from the local to the national to the global. It includes all forms of travel from forced migration for economic or political reasons, to leisure travel and tourism, to virtual travel via the myriad of electro...
