John Griffin (1804-1876) married Mary Chapman, and the family immigrated in 1846 from England (via Canada) to Cleveland, Ohio and from there to Waukegan, Illinois; he married Harriet Kirk about 1852 (after Mary died in 1851). Descendants and relatives lived in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, California and elsewhere.

Carlisle writes to Hill to protest an article quoting Carlisle saying damaging things about Hill. Carlisle states that they are "flagrantly unjust" and denies even being in New York when he was suppose to have said them.
