J.C. Wenger (1910-1995) was a teacher of Historical Theology in the Goshen Biblical Seminary, a seminary, a member school of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, Elkhart, Indiana. Born on December 25, 1910, at Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, he is a son of the Lancaster Conference, but he removed with his parents to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, as a boy, and was later baptized in the Rockhill congregation of the Franconia Conference. Lived Religion and the Long Reformation in Northern Europe puts Reformation in a daily life context using lived religion as a conceptual and methodological tool: exploring how people "lived out" their religion in their mundane toils and how religion created a performative space for them. This collection reinvestigates the character of the Reformation in an area that later became the heartlands of Lutheranism. The way people lived their religion was intricately linked with questions of the value of individual experience, communal cohesion and interaction. During the late Middle Ages and Early Modern Era religious certainty was replaced by the experience of doubt and hesitation. Negotiations on and between various social levels manifest the needs, aspirations and resistance behind the religious change. Soyer volunteered his services in the Crimea in 1855 to improve military cooking. This work gives a vivid account of his efforts to prepare nutritious meals for the soldiers using a newly invented portable field stove, which remained in use until the Second World War. " As a religious sect, the Anabaptists were seen to practice unusual rituals and follow an eccentric set of beliefs. One story, for instance, purports that an Anabaptist prophet, claiming to have visited heaven, persuaded his followers to run naked through the streets of Amsterdam. Eradicating the Devil's Minions investigates these beliefs in the context of Reformation Europe, a time in which persecution, religious intolerance, and witch-hunting were rampant. Focusing primarily on the Habsburg-controlled regions of Europe, Gary K. Waite argues that the persecution of Anabaptists did not go hand-in-hand with the outbreak of witch-hunts in the mid-sixteenth century. Rather, as distrust of Anabaptists predated the first major witch panic of 156263, Waite suggests that the virulent propaganda against Anabaptist heretics helped convince governments of the existence of a diabolical threat. Although Anabaptists rejected religious magic, they were consistently demonized by Catholic and Lutheran polemicists.
