In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, the memoir of a helmsman aboard a US destroyer at Pointe du Hoc (located between Omaha and Utah Beaches) is a timely eyewitness account of D-Day. At the age of just 20, John T. Siewert steered the USS Satterlee DD-626, the first American ship at the Normandy coast on D-Day, June 6, 1944, to provide covering fire for the US Rangers, as they scaled the daunting cliffs at Pointe du Hoc. Siewert, who died in August 2023 at the age of 99, tells of his life aboard a "tin can" (destroyer) during World War II. His story is also one of a boy born in 1920s Wisconsin to a family of butchers and storekeepers, his love of flying in the 1930s, and returning after WWII to forge a life and start a family as an enterprising insurance and real estate businessman and committed member of his community.

The New Shape of World Christianity

In this book Mark Noll makes the compelling case that how Americans have come to practice the Christian faith is just as globally important as what the American church has done in the world. He backs up this substantial claim with the scholarly attentiveness we've come to expect from him.

Illuminating. . . . Hiffernan posed as a model for many of Whistler’s works, including his controversial Symphony in White paintings, a trilogy that fascinated and challenged viewers with its complex associations with sex and morality, cl...

The Gospel of Freedom and Power

In the decades after World War II, Protestant missionaries abroad were a topic of vigorous public debate. From religious periodicals and Sunday sermons to novels and anthropological monographs, public conversations about missionaries followed a powerful yet paradoxical line of reasoning, namely that people abroad needed greater autonomy from U.S. power and that Americans could best tell others how to use their freedom. In The Gospel of Freedom and Power, Sarah E. Ruble traces and analyzes these public discussions about what it meant for Americans abroad to be good world citizens, placing them firmly in the context of the United States' postwar global dominance. Bringing together a wide range of sources, Ruble seeks to understand how discussions about a relatively small group of Americans working abroad became part of a much larger cultural conversation. She concludes that whether viewed as champions of nationalist revolutions or propagators of the gospel of capitalism, missionaries--along with their supporters, interpreters, and critics--ultimately both challenged and reinforced a rhetoric of exceptionalism that made Americans the judges of what was good for the rest of the world.
