Excerpt from John Sullivan Dwight, Brook-Farmer, Editor, and Critic of Music: A Biography This biography of John S. Dwight was under-taken at the suggestion and request of Mrs. Ednah D. Cheney, and it has secured the benefit of her aid and revision. The aim kept in view in its preparation was to permit Dwight to speak for himself as far as it could be done, and to make the work autobiographic in so far as this was possible of accomplishment. As he was not a frequent letter-writer, resource has been had to the published words of his which throw light upon his career. Many of these are of an autobiographic nature, and they have been drawn upon frequently. The letters written to Dwight by his f...

John Sullivan Dwight

"John Sullivan Dwight (1813-93) was for much of the nineteenth century America's leading music critic. Born into a musical family and educated at several premiere Boston schools, he fell under the spell of New England Transcendentalism during which time he befriended Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Margaret Fuller, George Ripley, and others of a similarly progressive mindset. Dwight resided at the socialist/utopian community of Brook Farm where he learned the art of journalism and the business of publishing while writing for The Harbinger. He wrote on many topics-Transcendentalism, of course, but especially on music and musical performance. Dwight was a skilled communicator, a...

A Revolutionary Conscience

Theodore Parker was one of the most controversial theologians and social activists in pre-Civil War America. A vocal critic of traditional Christian thought and a militant opponent of American slavery, he led a huge congregation of religious dissenters in the very heart of Boston, Massachusetts, during the 1840s and 1850s. This book argues that Parker’s radical vision and contemporary appeal stemmed from his abiding faith in the human conscience and in the principles of the American revolutionary tradition. A leading figure in Boston’s resistance to the Fugitive Slave Law, Parker became a key supporter of John Brown’s dramatic but ill-fated raid on Harper’s Ferry in 1859. Propelled by a revolutionary conscience, Theodore Parker stood out as one of the most fearless religious reformers and social activists of his generation.
