In On Track with the Japanese, Patricia Gercik, Managing Director of the M.I.T. Japan Program, offers us twenty-three portraits of men and women who have succeeded - or failed - in forging personal business ties with the Japanese. With skillfully written anecdotes Gercik teaches Westerners how to avoid cross-cultural pitfalls, overcome communication barriers, and build networks on a foundation of trust. According to Gercik, the insider/outsider nature of Japanese society requires a graduated approach to relationships, which she has divided into four stages: "Know Me, " "Trust Me, " "Believe Me, " and "Marry Me." By emphasizing consistent patterns of Japanese business etiquette in a wide variety of settings, Gercik provides a hands-on, interactive approach to the inner workings of a complex and often frustrating society.
With a new preface and a new epilogue co-written with Jorge Ramirez-Lopez, this updated edition of Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies provides an intimate examination of the everyday lives, suffering, and resistance of Mexican migrants in our contemporary food system. Seth Holmes, an anthropologist and MD in the mold of Paul Farmer and Didier Fassin, shows how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care. Holmes was invited to trek with his companions clandestinely through the desert into Arizona and was jailed with them before they were deported. He lived with Indigenous families in the mountains of Oaxaca and in farm labor camps in the United States, planted...
Korean immigrants and their experiences in the United States from 1903-1941.
The extent to which Japan will improve its military forces in the next 10 years will determine the balance of power in Asia, if not in the world. Because of the close economic and security ties which the United States has with Japan, and because Japan is the lynchpin of the United States foreign policy in the Pacific, future US actions will have a substantial impact on Japanese-US relations. This monograph examines the major factors which may influence Japan's decision on how much to improve its military forces. (Modified author abstract)?291.

The properties of a material depend not only on the specific atoms and molecules it contains, but also on the arrangement of these in space. Many of these three-dimensional arrangements are described as "3D-nets" or "3D-networks". Molecule-Based Materials: The Structural Network Approach is about the synthesis, description, nomenclature and analysis of such nets and the relation of the nets to the physical properties of the materials. It introduces the mathematics, and includes a short guide to programs useful for retrieving, analysing and naming nets. Complete with illustrations and examples of coordination polymer and hydrogen bonded nets, this unique easy-to-read book examines all aspects of 3D nets and will undeniably prove itself valuable to newcomers, well-seasoned students and researchers working in crystallography, inorganic or organic chemistry.* Covers all aspects of molecule-based 3D nets, complete with 3D illustrations * Contains summary tables of all nets* Easy reading eliminates the need for background knowledge in crystallography or mathematics
