Kim Lim: The Space Between. A Retrospective repositions Singapore-born British artist Kim Lim as a pivotal figure in 20th-century sculpture and printmaking. As part of the first generation of diaspora and immigrant artists who moved to Britain after the Second World War seeking an art education, Lim has often been overlooked. This exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore is an attempt to demonstrate her unique contributions and highlight how she drew upon aesthetic values from material cultures across Asia and Europe to develop her own artistic language. Lim both referenced and resisted the burgeoning Euro-American discourse on Minimalism and abstraction, as well as the narrow cultural labels used to interpret her life and work. Featuring plates of more than 70 selected works, a curatorial introduction and three illustrated essays, this catalogue provides a fresh overview of Lim’s sculptural philosophy and offers new scholarly insights into her intellectual growth, artistic practice and creative relationships.

Earth Work 1979
Earth Work, originally staged at the National Museum Art Gallery in 1980 by Singapore artist Tang Da Wu, was one of the earliest exhibitions of land art in Singapore. Key works from the exhibition included Gully Curtains, Product of the Sun and Me and Product of the Rain and Me. Earth Work 1979 is a restaging of selected works from the seminal 1980 exhibition. This catalogue delves deeper into Tang’s practice, the circumstances of the creation of his earth works and the environment of Singapore in the 1970s and 1980s through essays, interviews, newspaper articles and never-before-seen photo documentation.
Suddenly Turning Visible: Art and Architecture in Southeast Asia (1969–1989)
In 1981, the Filipino artist and curator Raymundo Albano adopted the expression “Suddenly Turning Visible” to describe the rapid transformation of Manila’s urban landscape. The visibility that Albano evoked was aspirational, driven by a desire for rapid economic growth in which art had a critical role. This catalogue traces this story through three influential art institutions: the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Alpha Gallery in Singapore and the Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art in Bangkok. Teo Eng Seng: We’re Happy. Are You Happy? offers a comprehensive overview of Singapore artist Teo Eng Seng’s bold experimentations over the last seven decades. Teo is known for his invention of what he terms “paperdyesculp”—a malleable mixture of pulp, natural fibres and other commonplace materials, and his technique of finessing it, inspired by Chinese papermaking and calligraphic traditions, and Western abstraction. Through painting, sculpture and paperdyesculp, Teo draws aesthetic vocabularies from an extraordinary range of cultural sources only to deconstruct them, directing the self—spontaneous and raw as he deems—in irreverent jest. Pervasive in his oeuvre is a radical openness to the social world, teasing us to question the human condition with unabashed humour, irony and wit.
The Neglected Dimension
The Neglected Dimension offers an insight into a moment in Southeast Asian modern art when a group of artists from the city of Bandung, Indonesia reimagined Arabic calligraphic writing. At the heart of this effort was an art school at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), which stood at the forefront of experimentations with forms of Islamic spirituality and abstraction. Four artists are featured in this exhibition: Ahmad Sadali (1924–1987), A.D. Pirous (b. 1932), Haryadi Suadi (1938–2016) and Arahmaiani (b. 1962). They represent three generations of artistic training at ITB, as well as distinct approaches to calligraphic abstraction that reflect changing values, identities and conventions in Indonesia from the 1970s to the present. Together, their works highlight how they interacted with global conventions in modern art, evolving ideas around Islamic spirituality, feminist activism and the experience of being Muslim in Indonesia.

American Art in Asia
This book challenges existing notions of what is "American" and/or "Asian" art, moving beyond the identity issues that have dominated art-world conversations of the 1980s and the 1990s and aligning with new trends and issues in contemporary art today, e.g. the Global South, labor, environment, and gender identity. Contributors examine both historical and contemporary instances in art practices and exhibition-making under the rubric of "American art in Asia." The book complicates existing notions of what constitutes American art, Asian American (and American Asian) art.
