Since the end of state repression against religion, two major processes have taken place in the formerly socialist countries: historically dominant churches strive to reassert their position in society, while new religious groups and ideas from various parts of the world are proliferating. This generates pluralism of religious communities and individual religious attitudes. Religious Diversity in Post-Soviet Society presents the first collection of ethnographies of this new religious diversity for Lithuania, a country that has a long history of a dominant Catholic Church. The authors reveal how Catholicism has become increasingly diversified and other religions (Charismatic Protestantism, Baltic Paganism, Eastern religions and other alternative spiritualities) are claiming their space in the religious field.
A distinctive aspect of Hindu devotion is the veneration of a human guru, who is not only an exemplar and a teacher, but is often worshipped as an embodiment of the divine. In the past these gurus have almost always been men. Today, however, female gurus are a noticeable presence, especially in the United States.
This is an ethnographic study of rituals celebrated by multiple castes in two Karnataka villages, and accompanying myths. Family organization is described in detail, along with discussion of women’s complex status in patrilineal kin groups, as background and context. Four types of family celebrations are described and analysed: for benign goddesses helping married women, for restless and dangerous goddesses threatening whole families, ancestor propitiation rites, and ant-hill festivals for a cobra deity. Forty-five colour photos have been added to the original text.
This study presents a systematic analysis of the huge, and in most cases, completely new archaeological evidence for amber from Lithuania and the surrounding regions. A comprehensive synthesis of archaeological evidence and written sources provides an opportunity to develop new viewpoints about the sources of amber, extraction methods, amber-wearing traditions in different Aestii/Balt cultures and by people of different social status, ages and genders, and the amber trade in different markets in Lithuania and the whole eastern Baltic region. However, a tradition of amber usage in Lithuania was dependent not only on the ability of local communities to acquire “northern gold” but, to a larger degree, its use in the north was determined by cultural developments that took place in Europe.
This book is a biography and reception history of the Lithuanian–American archaeologist Marija Gimbutas (1921–1994). It presents the first transnational account of Gimbutas’ life based on historical research, and an original examination of the impact of her ideas in various feminist contexts, both academic and popular. The Hikayat Indraputra, or adventures of Indraputra, is a fine example of traditional Malay story-telling, in the form of the prose hikayat. It follows the hero through the fantastic realms of jinns and demigods where he wins the hands of beautiful princesses and obtains magic stones to aid him in his battles. It is a tale that is well-known and must long have been popular among he Malay-speaking peoples, to judge from the large number of manuscripts that have survived. Dr. Mulyadi presents the complete Malay text, according to the reading of a manuscript dating from 1700 and now kept in the collection of the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology, Leiden. She also gives a very full English rendering of the story, and enough background information to provide a sound basic for further literary analysis. There is ample material here for the student of folklore, as well as those interested in the problems of Malay philology. This work represents a further step forward in the study of traditional Indonesian literatures, hence its place in the series Bibliotheca Indonesica, which aims to make texts in critical editions accessible to a wider public.
Ethnosensitive Dimensions of African Oral Literature: Igbo Perspectives is a collection of nineteen essays spanning all genres of African Oral literature, from the poetic genre to the rhetorical genre. Part One of the book is introductory, and includes three essays that are of a general kind, touching all aspects of the genres, while Part Two includes six essays concerned with the poetic genre. Part Three, made up of two essays and concern the prose genre while Part Four, of two essays, examines the drama genre. Part Five, made up of three essays, addresses the rhetorical genre, and Part Six has three essays that cut across all the genres. The contributions examine the implications of ethnocentric imperatives of oral literature in relation to nationalistic demands.
Wŏnhyo (617–686) is the dominant figure in the history of Korean Buddhism and one of the most influential thinkers in the Korean philosophical tradition.
