Sinophonic English Poetry and Poetics

Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. Music. The nearly supernatural nature of this groundbreaking work can be glimpsed in the book's title: YÍNGĒLÌSHI (Chanted Songs, Beautiful Poetry): SINOPHONIC ENGLISH POETRY AND POETICS. When read aloud, YÍNGĒLÌSHI (pronounced yeen guh lee shr) sounds like an accented pronunciation of the word "English," while the Chinese reader sees the Chinese characters for "chanted songs, beautiful poetry." Stalling coined this term (and "Sinophonic English") to give a positive name to an increasingly widespread variation of English created by combining the two dominant languages of globalization (Mandarin Chinese and English). With over 350 million English ...

An introduction to Jonathan Stalling's interlanguage art. Jonathan Stalling's experimental approach bridging art, poetics, and linguistics imagines a world where individual value systems are no longer translated into the language of other mediums, but foster conscious "interlanguages," spaces where one learns a new language without having left one's home fully behind. Stalling's conceptual language art fuses classical Chinese poetics and linguistics with modern algorithms to create art installations and poetry that transform Chinese and English in new and surprising ways. With a visual gallery of Stalling's work, interview with the artist, critical introduction by the editor, and critical chapters written by comparative literature scholar Timothy Billings and Chinese linguist Liu Nian, the volume provides readers with a significant introduction to a wide range of Stalling's interlanguage work spanning the past two decades.

Lost Wax

Poetry. Translation and translation studies. Poetry in translation is a trust exercise; reader must rely on translator to turn words into other words, while preserving the larger meaning of the original. Jonathan Stalling's book is for those readers less inclined to trust, and/or for those more fascinated by the playfulness of language(s). In LOST WAX, Stalling presents a sequence of poems about his wife's work as a sculptor. Those poems are translated into Chinese and back into English by members of a "workshop" of eight fellow translators. Each poem is then presented in a) the original; b) the Chinese; c) the new English version. An additional workshop page illustrates choices made by translators on both sides of the English/Chinese divide. LOST WAX is a marvelous book of poems that also presents an argument for translation as process, as variation. This book, as well as Stalling's fine introduction, will prove of interest to readers of contemporary American poetry, poetry in Chinese, as well as readers and practitioners of translation.

Poetics of Emptiness

The Poetics of Emptiness uncovers an important untold history by tracing the historically specific, intertextual pathways of a single, if polyvalent, philosophical term, emptiness, as it is transformed within twentieth-century American poetry and poetics. This conceptual migration is detailed in two sections. The first focuses on "transpacific Buddhist poetics," while the second maps the less well-known terrain of "transpacific Daoist poetics." In Chapters 1 and 2, the author explores Ernest Fenollosa's "The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Poetry" as an expression of Fenollosa's distinctly Buddhist poetics informed by a two-decade-long encounter with a culturally hybrid form of Bud...

Poetry. "In this book, Jonathan Stalling extends to us his hospitality. Enter this grotto, this book of poems a haven & lodge for light & dark, made by Jonathan Stalling with an ethics of respect & reverence. Pen opens to penumbra, shadowing each word. This book constitutes an attentive reaching, reading, a leaning into language, so that learning an other language rhymes with listening to & learning the emerging language-scape of one's own child. In Stalling's book we are lodged here, in poems, in a place allowing passage back & forth from the mystery of 'I' and 'we' to the mysterious housings of words in our language and in others. Words, characters, & embodiments make up the constellations, the figured stars within a larger darkness. I recommend to you GROTTO HEAVEN as a fine place to take up lodging"--Hank Lazer.

Shi Zhi has been a major force in Chinese poetry since 1968, when several of his poems were circulated as secret handwritten manuscripts in the midst of China’s Cultural Revolution. He gave voice to the aspirations of dispirited youth, and although once relegated to obscurity, he is today celebrated as one of China’s most important cultural influences, having spawned the modern Chinese poetry revolution of the 1980s. This collection of Shi Zhi’s most significant poems, featuring an afterword by the poet himself, is the first book-length publication of his work in English. Born as Guo Lusheng in 1948, at the height of the Chinese Civil War, Shi Zhi joined the People’s Liberation Army ...

By the River

The novella, as the editors of this volume explain, is in many ways the “native habitat” of modern Chinese literary production—the ideal fictional form for revealing the various facets of contemporary Chinese culture. The seven novellas collected here resoundingly support their claim. Featuring works by award winners and rising stars, women and men, By the River presents a confluence of some of the most compelling voices in China today. Together, their narratives reflect the rich diversity of Chinese experience in the modern era. These novellas are stories of coming of age in the countryside, of romance in the shadow of an electrical power station or in the watery landscape of a lost l...

Historical Dictionary of Modern Chinese Literature

Modern Chinese literature has been flourishing for over a century, with varying degrees of intensity and energy at different junctures of history and points of locale. An integral part of world literature from the moment it was born, it has been in constant dialogue with its counterparts from the rest of the world. As it has been challenged and enriched by external influences, it has contributed to the wealth of literary culture of the entire world. In terms of themes and styles, modern Chinese literature is rich and varied; from the revolutionary to the pastoral, from romanticism to feminism, from modernism to post-modernism, critical realism, psychological realism, socialist realism, and m...
