"Just about everyone affirms the importance of transparency, but you will hesitate about unthinkingly doing so after reading this book. Jorge Valdovinos moves between fields and disciplines with remarkable fluency to illuminate the ideological implications of transparency talk. If this is what post-disciplinary communication and media theory looks like, give me more. A brilliant piece of critical scholarship" -Sean Phelan, Massey University, NZ This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the critique of contemporary ideology, offering an innovative genealogy of one of its most fundamental discursive manoeuvres: the ideological effacement of mediation. Providing a comprehensive historica...

Human Rights, Imperialism, and Corruption in US Foreign Policy

Human Rights, Imperialism, and Corruption in US Foreign Policy

This book provides a novel account of the role of human rights discourse in the US foreign policy. The book analyses the US State Department’s Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices as a means to monopolise and, more importantly, legitimise a specific framing of the human rights agenda to further US foreign policy. The US agenda’s deviation from established international human rights standards has very serious implications considering the preponderant global influence exercised by the US. Furthermore, more recently, the reports have added a separate section on "corruption" as a human rights issue. “Corruption”, a controversial concept from the outset, is understood in a narrow way as a public sector issue that largely prevails in and subverts the so-called developing and transition countries. This book shows how this recent inclusion ultimately serves the US global neoliberal imperialist agenda and becomes the hegemonic discourse in international organisations.

Hyperborder

Roving vigilantes, fear-mongering politicians, hysterical pundits, and the looming shadow of a seven hundred-mile-long fence: the US–Mexican border is one of the most complex and dynamic areas on the planet today. Hyperborder provides the most nuanced portrait yet of this dynamic region. Author Fernando Romero presents a multidisciplinary perspective informed by interviews with numerous academics, researchers, and organizations. Provocatively designed in the style of other kinetic large-scale studies like Rem Koolhaas's Content and Bruce Mau’s Massive Change, Hyperborder is an exhaustively researched report from the front lines of the border debate.

This is the definitive bibliography of autobiographical writings on Mexico. The book incorporates works by Mexicans and foreigners, with authors ranging from disinherited peasants, women, servants and revolutionaries to more famous painters, writers, singers, journalists and politicians. Primary sources of historic and artistic value, the writings listed provide multiple perspectives on Mexico's past and give clues to a national Mexican identity. This work presents 1,850 entries, including autobiographies, memoirs, collections of letters, diaries, oral autobiographies, interviews, and autobiographical novels and essays. Over 1,500 entries list works from native-born Mexicans written between 1691 and 2003. Entries include basic bibliographical data, genre, author's life dates, narrative dates, available translations into English, and annotation. The bibliography is indexed by author, title and subject, and appendices provide a chronological listing of works and a list of selected outstanding autobiographies.

Regional Economic Outlook, April 2012, Western Hemisphere

Growth in much of Latin America remains solid, although it slowed during the second half of 2011 as result of the combined effects of policy tightening and global uncertainties. Under our baseline, we expect growth in Latin America and the Caribbean to moderate to about 33⁄4 percent in 2012, from about 41⁄2 last year. For many countries, high commodity prices and easy external financing conditions will provide tailwinds. For others, weak growth in the United States and other advanced-country partners, or homegrown fiscal problems, will hold back activity. This edition of the Regional Economic Outlook: Western Hemisphere elaborates on three key themes. First, the global economic environme...
