New and Old Routes of Portuguese Emigration
This open access book offers a comparative overview on Portuguese emigration in Europe and outside the EU in times of recession. It looks at Portuguese emigrants who, after the crisis of 2008, moved both intra-EU, such as UK, France, Switzerland, Germany and Spain, but also into countries with historical links, such as the USA and Canada, and to Portuguese speaking countries such as Brazil, Angola and Mozambique, as well as the processes of return. In addition to the dynamics of movement, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the heterogeneity of this emigration. It deepens the multifaceted identities concerning social and professional pathways among highly skilled and less skilled emigrants. The labour market continues to be the main regulatory force of Portuguese emigration, which helps to explain the outflow and the processes of settlement and return. Nonetheless, this book demonstrates that non-economic factors have likewise been of great importance in the decision to emigrate. As such this book will be a valuable read to policy makers, students and scholars in migration.

Social Innovation and Territorial Development
The concept of social innovation offers an alternative perspective on development and territorial transformation, one which foregrounds innovation in social relations. The Demographic Characteristics of Immigrant Populations
This publication presents a series of studies conducted by the European Population Committee between 1998 and 2001 together with specialised research institutes in eight European countries: Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Portugal and Estonia. These focus on groups that are well established in several countries to enable comparison. The studies describe the origin of migrants, inflows and outflows of immigrant populations, fertility, family formation, intermarriage, mortality and the spatial distribution in the countries of settlement. They also include a co-ordinated modelling exercise to estimate the demographic impact of immigration on receiving populations since the Second World War.

No seguimento do estudo A Criminalidade de Estrangeiros em Portugal: Um Inquérito Científico, nesta obra os autores debruçam-se sobre o denominado topo da pirâmide da criminalidade, isto é, a realidade dos estrangeiros reclusos em Portugal. Nesse sentido, foram analisadas as estatísticas oficiais da Direcção Geral dos Serviços Prisionais nos 10 anos compreendidos entre 1994 e 2003, sendo prestado especial enfoque a esta último ano.
