Historical Perspectives on East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine brings together over fifty papers by leading contemporary historians from more than a dozen nations. It is the third in a series of books growing out of the tri-annual International Conference on the History of Science in East Asia, the largest and most prestigious gathering of scholars in the field. The current volume broadens the field's traditional focus on China to include path-breaking work on Vietnam, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and even the transmission of Asian science and technology to Europe and the United States. This book re-examines the nature of early Chinese work in natural science, on the basis of original records analysis and artifacts discovered in recent decades by archaeological explorations of China's past. It presents a concise account of early scientific ideas and thoughts of nature, and their effect on the development of natural science. It is suggested that the traditional characterization of early Chinese work in natural science requires substantial modification. The absence of early Chinese participation in the development of 'modern' science is not, as commonly assumed, a consequence of lacking early scientific tradition in ancient China. It is argued that the concept of 'inhibitive' factors is dubious without taking their dynamical relationships into account, and that socio-economical and political influence has to be considered when seeking answers to the major setbacks in science and technology in China. The book also shows that there is no basis for the claims saying that acoustics and astronomy in China have their roots in Babylon.
This text explores the connections between the theory of hyperspherical harmonics, momentum-space quantum theory and generalized Sturmian basis functions. It also introduces methods which may be used to solve many-particle problems directly, without the use of the self-consistent-field approximation.; The method of many-electron Sturmians offers an interesting alternative to the usual SCF-CI methods for calculating atomic and molecular structure. When many-electron Sturmians are used, and when the basis potential is chosen to be the attractive potential of the nuclei in the system, the following advantages are offered: the matrix representation of the nuclear attraction potential is diagonal; the kinetic energy term vanishes from the secular equation; the Slater exponents of the atomic orbitals are automatically optimized; convergence is rapid; a correlated solution to the many-electron problem can be obtained directly, without the use of the SCF approximation; and excited states can be obtained with good accuracy.; The text should be of interest to advanced students and research workers in theoretical chemistry, physics and mathematics.

The Huainanzi has in recent years been recognized by scholars as one of the seminal works of Chinese thought at the beginning of the imperial era, a summary of the full flowering of early Taoist philosophy. This book presents a study of three key chapters of the Huainanzi, "The Treatise on the Patterns of Heaven," "The Treatise on Topography," and "The Treatise on the Seasonal Rules," which collectively comprise the most comprehensive extant statement of cosmological thinking in the early Han period. Major presents, for the first time, full English translations of these treatises. He supplements the translations with detailed commentaries that clarify the sometimes arcane language of the text and presents a fascinating picture of the ancient Chinese view of how the world was formed and sustained, and of the role of humans in the cosmos.
