His family had perished in the death camp; but the fate of his brother Stefan, who joined the Jewish Police in the Ghetto; is unknown. David hides on the "Aryan" side with the help of his teacher and his high school friends. When the Gestapo raids his place, he escapes but is accosted by a man blackmailing Jews.
