Betting on Biotech

After World War II, several late-developing countries registered astonishingly high growth rates under strong state direction, making use of smart investment strategies, turnkey factories, and reverse-engineering, and taking advantage of the postwar global economic boom. Among these economic miracles were postwar Japan and, in the 1960s and 1970s, the so-called Asian Tigers—Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan—whose experiences epitomized the analytic category of the "developmental state." In Betting on Biotech, Joseph Wong examines the emerging biotechnology sector in each of these three industrial dynamos. They have invested billions of dollars in biotech industries since the 1990s, but ...

Healthy Democracies

Do the pressures of economic globalization undermine the welfare state? Contrary to the expectations of many analysts, Taiwan and South Korea have embarked on a new trajectory, toward a strengthened welfare state and universal inclusion. In Healthy Democracies, Joseph Wong offers a political explanation for health care reform in these two countries. He focuses specifically on the ways in which democratic change in Taiwan and South Korea altered the incentives and ultimately the decisions of policymakers and social policy activists in contemporary health care debates.Wong uses extensive field research and interviews to explore both similarities and subtle differences in the processes of polit...

I Choose What Happens to Me. As a parent, you are probably concerned about what the new tomorrow looks for your children amid talk of how technology would fundamentally change the way we live and work. The motivation for this book comes from the simple notion that everything a child needs to know today to prepare for this new tomorrow is already available. The reason they are not exposed to it is that schools have not begun teaching them. From Development to Democracy

Why some of Asia’s authoritarian regimes have democratized as they have grown richer—and why others haven’t Over the past century, Asia has been transformed by rapid economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization—a spectacular record of development that has turned one of the world’s poorest regions into one of its richest. Yet Asia’s record of democratization has been much more uneven, despite the global correlation between development and democracy. Why have some Asian countries become more democratic as they have grown richer, while others—most notably China—haven’t? In From Development to Democracy, Dan Slater and Joseph Wong offer a sweeping and original answer to...

Windmill Therapy

We can live over 100 years because our body cells are constantly replacing themselves. For instance, the hair and the nails continually regrow. Around every seven years, all the cells in the body are replaced. At the beginning, everyone is balanced, but over time, due to accidental injuries or improper movements, parts of the body become distorted. An unbalanced body is then developed. Then, all muscle coordination is working for the distorted body. What Joseph does in his treatment is to help the patient to unlock the distorted parts, and to show them how to do movements with the correct muscles to regain a balanced body. Thereafter, the patient will regain proper muscle coordination on both sides of the body. During the treatment period, body cell replacement continues, and these new generation cells will work better in a balanced structure. The whole body will then be supported by new generation cells with proper muscle coordination. If the body cannot generate new cells to replace old problem cells, the bodycannot be fixed from distortion.
