This monograph offers a coherent, self-contained account of the theory of Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen measures and decay of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. A central topic in the statistical theory of dynamical systems, the book in particular provides a detailed exposition of the theory developed by L.-S. Young for systems admitting induced maps with certain analytic and geometric properties. After a brief introduction and preliminary results, Chapters 3, 4, 6 and 7 provide essentially the same pattern of results in increasingly interesting and complicated settings. Each chapter builds on the previous one, apart from Chapter 5 which presents a general abstract framewor...
Dynamics, Games and Science I and II are a selection of surveys and research articles written by leading researchers in mathematics. The majority of the contributions are on dynamical systems and game theory, focusing either on fundamental and theoretical developments or on applications to modeling in biology, ecomonics, engineering, finances and psychology. The papers are based on talks given at the International Conference DYNA 2008, held in honor of Mauricio Peixoto and David Rand at the University of Braga, Portugal, on September 8-12, 2008. The aim of these volumes is to present cutting-edge research in these areas to encourage graduate students and researchers in mathematics and other fields to develop them further.
This comprehensive volume contains the state of the art on ODE's and PDE's of different nature, functional differential equations, delay equations, and others, mostly from the dynamical systems point of view.A broad range of topics are treated through contributions by leading experts of their fields, presenting the most recent developments. A large variety of techniques are being used, stressing geometric, topological, ergodic and numerical aspects. The scope of the book is wide, ranging from pure mathematics to various applied fields. Examples of the latter are provided by subjects from earth and life sciences, classical mechanics and quantum-mechanics, among others. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences
Cahora Bassa Dam on the Zambezi River, built in the early 1970s during the final years of Portuguese rule, was the last major infrastructure project constructed in Africa during the turbulent era of decolonization. Engineers and hydrologists praised the dam for its technical complexity and the skills required to construct what was then the world’s fifth-largest mega-dam. Portuguese colonial officials cited benefits they expected from the dam—from expansion of irrigated farming and European settlement, to improved transportation throughout the Zambezi River Valley, to reduced flooding in this area of unpredictable rainfall. “The project, however, actually resulted in cascading layers of...
Covers the fundamental aspects of the classical theory and introduces significant recent developments. Based on the author's graduate course.
Accompanying CD-ROM (PAL) contains genealogies of Jewish immigrants to Brazil from the Middle East.
Monograph on the historical role of Portugal's crown estates (prazos da coroa) established in Mozambique during the early 17th century as the institutional framework of feudalism and political power - assesses the impact of this social institution on the social and cultural anthropology of zambezi indigenous peoples, and covers political systems, economic structures, social structures, interethnic relations, the decline of the system and the growth of social conflict. Bibliography pp. 238 to 252, maps and references.
