The volume includes lecture notes and research papers by participants of the Seventh Symposium on Probability and Stochastic Processes held in Mexico City. The lecture notes introduce recent advances in stochastic calculus with respect to fractional Brownian motion, principles of large deviations and of minimum entropy concerning equilibrium prices in random economic systems, and give a complete and thorough survey of credit risk theory. For almost fifty years, Richard M. Dudley has been extremely influential in the development of several areas of Probability. His work on Gaussian processes led to the understanding of the basic fact that their sample boundedness and continuity should be characterized in terms of proper measures of complexity of their parameter spaces equipped with the intrinsic covariance metric. His sufficient condition for sample continuity in terms of metric entropy is widely used and was proved by X. Fernique to be necessary for stationary Gaussian processes, whereas its more subtle versions (majorizing measures) were proved by M. Talagrand to be necessary in general. Together with V. N. Articles in this volume are based on presentations given at the IV Meeting of Mexican Mathematicians Abroad (IV Reunión de Matemáticos Mexicanos en el Mundo), held from June 10–15, 2018, at Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO), Mexico. This meeting was the fourth in a series of ongoing biannual meetings bringing together Mexican mathematicians working abroad with their peers in Mexico. This book features surveys and research articles from five broad research areas: algebra, analysis, combinatorics, geometry, and topology. Their topics range from general relativity and mathematical physics to interactions between logic and ergodic theory. Several articles provide a panoramic view of the fields and problems on which the authors are currently working on, showcasing diverse research lines complementary to those currently pursued in Mexico. The research-oriented manuscripts provide either alternative approaches to well-known problems or new advances in active research fields.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Second Workshop of Mexican Mathematicians Abroad (II Reunión de Matemáticos Mexicanos en el Mundo), held from December 15–19, 2014, at Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas (CIMAT) in Guanajuato, Mexico. This meeting was the second in a series of ongoing biannual meetings aimed at showcasing the research of Mexican mathematicians based outside of Mexico. The book features articles drawn from eight broad research areas: algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, combinatorics, dynamical systems, geometry, probability theory, and topology. Their topics range from novel applications of non-commutative probability to graph theory, to interactions between dynamical systems and geophysical flows. Several articles survey the fields and problems on which the authors work, highlighting research lines currently underrepresented in Mexico. The research-oriented articles provide either alternative approaches to well-known problems or new advances in active research fields. The wide selection of topics makes the book accessible to advanced graduate students and researchers in mathematics from different fields.
Water resources in Mexico are threatened by scarcity, pollution and climate change. In two decades water consumption doubled, producing water stress in dry seasons and semi-arid and arid regions. Water stress rises due to physical and economic stress. In seven parts a multidisciplinary team analyzes hydrological processes in basins and their interaction with climate, soil and biota. Competing water use in agriculture, industry and domestic needs require savings, decontamination processes and desalination to satisfy the growing demand. Water quality affects health and ecosystems. This creates conflicts and cooperation that may be enhanced by public policy, institution building and social organization.
Probability theory has been the only well-founded theory of uncertainty for a long time. It was viewed either as a powerful tool for modelling random phenomena, or as a rational approach to the notion of degree of belief. This book consists of three expository articles written by outstanding researchers in Mathematical Physics: Rafael Benguria, Peter Hislop, and Elliott Lieb. The articles are based on their lectures at the Fourth Summer School in Analysis and Mathematical Physics, held at the Institute of Mathematics, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Cuernavaca in May 2005.
