À partir des chroniques nobiliaires d'époque trastamare, cette étude cherche à établir comment la guerre était vécue et racontée en Castille au XVe siècle. Les deux premiers chapitres portent sur les conditions de production de ces textes, et abordent les problèmes posés par la mise en récit de l'expérience vécue. Les trois suivants montrent que la culture de guerre est alors largement partagée au sein de la noblesse, sans considération de genre ni de statut : femmes et clercs n'en sont pas exclus. En revanche, le discours sur la guerre construit une forme d'exclusivité nobiliaire qui se manifeste dans le traitement narratif réservé aux combattants roturiers. Le dernier chapitre aborde enfin le combat dans une perspective anthropologique, en s'attachant au corps et aux émotions du guerrier.
