Pedro Iturralde is attracted to complex things. He does not go thru life searching for them. But when confronted by them, his capacity of wonder wakes up, and he dedicates in heart and mind to master it, or at least to try to become proficient on it. Once he was invited to watch a Jai Alai game. He became absolutely amazed by the speed of the ball, and the incredible mastery that the players displayed. How could they, apparently so easily, retain the ball in such a weird basket, and throw it back at the wall by means of a forceful and elegant motion? In that moment, he decided to try, to turn himself into a pelotari. Years later when playing a much competed championship game, he is struck by...

Skepticals in religion: watch out! Do not criticize anything about any religion. It is not of good taste; it is considered lack of respect and tact. Better turn apart a political party, science, a football team or anything else; but do not touch religion, even with the petal of a rose. What kind of privilege is that? Who provided it? It is not the case for this book. In it, I talk about the evil they all produce. Its essence is to forbid thinking. Faith and revelations cannot be doubted a bit, even existing ample evidence of its falsehood. From the hundreds of religions, which is the true one? Coincidentally and curiously, the one that each person happens to follow, by pure chance, of where ...

Evidently, this book refers to Homo sapiens. The most successful species on earth today, also the worst plague that ever existed. We are stubbornly determined to grow without limit and destroy the planet in every conceivable way. Topics: climate change, overpopulation, evolution, actual and future dangers, limits to growth, etc., having science as the only probable salvation for the foretold coming worldwide catastrophe within this century. A reasonable way of stating a problem is also to present possible solutions. I propose an urgent and profound improvement of intelligence via a method of relation, a concept developed by the writer Luis Alberto Machado, the only assigned minister of intelligence development ever. I present a detailed description of a specific method of relation and proof of why this method might work to at least attenuate our coming global predicament. Science applied with improved intelligence and wisdom could still give the deluxe chimp a slim survival chance.

A man wakes up in someone elses body and then struggles to figure out what has happened. What happened to his former body, wife, and life? Who was the man whose body he is now in? Can he just fit in to a new family and life, or can he get his old life back? Is this all just a bad dream? Another man receives a series of threatening notes at work (Watch Out!) and then struggles to make sense of the situation and his life. He discovers that others at his office receive identical notes, and panic ensues. Can he and his colleagues puzzle it out? Should they flee or can they fight back? The stories of these two men intertwine in Anonymous. Their lives come together in a completely unexpected way. Rich scenes populate the novelmany of them highly ironic, others deeply poignant. Ignacio Solares published the original Spanish version of Anonymous in 1979. It has enjoyed numerous editions and boasts sales of over one hundred thousand copies. It is one of eighteen Mexican novels recently placed in every high school library in the country.

The Reception of Darwinism in the Iberian World

I Twenty-five years ago, at the Conference on the Comparative Reception of Darwinism held at the University of Texas in 1972, only two countries of the Iberian world-Spain and Mexico-were represented.' At the time, it was apparent that the topic had attracted interest only as regarded the "mainstream" science countries of Western Europe, plus the United States. The Eurocentric bias of professional history of science was a fact. The sea change that subsequently occurred in the historiography of science makes 1972 appear something like the antediluvian era. Still, we would like to think that that meeting was prescient in looking beyond the mainstream science countries-as then perceived-in orde...

Critical Medical Anthropology presents inspiring work from scholars doing and engaging with ethnographic research in or from Latin America, addressing themes that are central to contemporary Critical Medical Anthropology (CMA). This includes issues of inequality, embodiment of history, indigeneity, non-communicable diseases, gendered violence, migration, substance abuse, reproductive politics and judicialisation, as these relate to health. The collection of ethnographically informed research, including original theoretical contributions, reconsiders the broader relevance of CMA perspectives for addressing current global healthcare challenges from and of Latin America. It includes work spanning four countries in Latin America (Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala and Peru) as well as the trans-migratory contexts they connect and are defined by. By drawing on diverse social practices, it addresses challenges of central relevance to medical anthropology and global health, including reproduction and maternal health, sex work, rare and chronic diseases, the pharmaceutical industry and questions of agency, political economy, identity, ethnicity, and human rights.
