This book examines the various figures and interests involved in the design and construction of the Canada Pavilion and explores how it was used over the past sixty years to exhibit the work of Canadian artists and architects. This publication intends not only to underline the pavilion's importance in the broader context of modern architecture, but also to highlight its role as an early example of cultural diplomacy. The book is fully endowed with archive material, such as photographs, drawings, and maps, along with a portfolio created by contemporary photographers (Francesco Barasciutti and Andrea Pertoldeo), showing the building before, during, and after the restoration. The essays of the ...

Otherworld Uprising is the first major monograph for Toronto-based Shary Boyle, who is becoming known for her uncanny and exquisite porcelain figurines that skillfully subvert the historical expectations inherent to this traditional material. Boyle's multifaceted practice also includes figurative drawing, painting and performances that give voice to the under-represented--children, animals and women--while also taking on aspects of the spiritual and the metaphysical. Through dream-like references to mythology and fairytales, her imagery illustrates female desire from a female point of view. Boyle is also known for her multi-layered audio-visual performances, during which she does live drawings on an overhead projector. Many of these have been incorporated into shows by musicians such as Feist, Peaches, Christine Fellows and Will Oldham. This volume contains new stories by novelist Sheila Heti, illustrated by Boyle, as well as texts by the Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada, Josée Drouin-Brisebois, and Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Ben Portis.

"... Consider the idea of history and the artwork's moment in time; the intersection of geography and history in regional practice, illustrated by examples from Eastern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand; the contradictory scales of evolution, life cycles, and bodily rhythms in bio art; and the history of the future--how the future has been imagined, planned for, and established as a vector throughout the history of new media arts." --book jacket.

Examining the compelling and often poignant connection between women and the material culture of death, this collection focuses on the objects women make, the images they keep, the practices they use or are responsible for, and the places they inhabit and construct through ritual and custom. Contemporary Art and the Baroque. Featuring the work of six international artists, this publication examines a recurring facet of contemporary artistic production material excess, accumulation, bravado, asymmetry, and theatricality. The impact of such art is decidedly visual and primeval, with artists creating powerfully immersive environments aimed at enticing, challenging and even unsettling viewers. Three essays discuss ornamentation, hybridity, material sensibilities, transformation and the sublime in contemporary art practice."
