Jose de Galvez, Visitor-General of New Spain (1765-1771) (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Jose De Galvez, Visitor-General of New Spain (1765-1771) Inasmuch as the later efficiency of Galvez in his ministry was due to experience gained in actual field service in New Spain as visitor-general of the affairs of public finance (1765 and inasmuch as the policy he was later to pursue was formu lated and initiated during the years of his residence in America, it has seemed Wise to restrict the scope of the present study to the activities of those years. In so doing the aim has been to present the measures initiated by Galvez as visitor-general in their connection with the general colonial policy and its reform. To this end a study of the visitation, and of the department of ...

All over the world there are more than seven billion mouths to feed and by 2050 this figure will exceed the threshold of nine billion. We have, however, only one Earth: therefore to produce more, efficiently, and with less waste is truly a global challenge.Edible oil, one of the key ingredients in our diet, has become a precious asset. For this reason, the different varieties of edible oil (palm oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, etc.) are at the center of a significant agribusiness venture in which large companies vie for enormous geographical areas for cultivation, and for market share. The major players in the oil war have often turned a commercial battle into a par...

Geographies of New Femininities

Geographies of New Femininities examines the emergence of contemporary constructions of femininity in a global context. It asks whether these femininities are new and suggests that current celebrations of diversity in the lived experience and performance of women's identities are largely Euro-centric. Through four in-depth case studies Geographies of New Femininities illustrates how constructions of femininities across the world reflect gender inequalities embedded within global/local geographies of social and economic change. The analysis brings together key themes in geography and feminist studies, showing how globalisation and the fracturing of identities are influencing research on gender. Throughout the book the authors explore spaces of opportunity and oppression for women and highlight the geographies associated with the negotiation of gender identities. Geographies of New Femininities moves between empirical and theoretical debate using first hand accounts to work through methodological issues relating to gender and geography. It is deliberately written in an accessible style to encourage students to engage with up-to-date research on gender.

Vatos

Vatos

One evening, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Jose Galvez heard Luis Alberto Urrea read Hymn to Vatos Who Will Never Be in a Poem with its chant like repetitions and its evocation of Chicano manhood. As Luis read each line, an image clicked in Jose's memory, and he knew that he had already taken that photograph. The result of that experience is this remarkable book.A unique collaboration of two acclaimed artists, Vatos is a tribute to Latino men who are too often forgotten, ignored, and misrepresented by the larger culture -- children playing in the streets, migrant workers toiling for a better life, homeboys in the barrio, young men with their girlfriends and their mothers, blue collar workers, activists on the streets, sons, uncles, fathers, and grandfathers. Vatos recognizes their joys, their sorrows, their tenderness and their strength. Through Galvez's photographs and Urrea's words, they will not be forgotten. The word vato, by the way, is Mexican-American slang, a word that means dude or guy, but here it carries more soul than either of these.
