Massive Stars in Starbursts
This book reviews the importance of massive stars in several areas of astrophysics. Massive stars are objects that are 10-100 times the mass of our Sun. Above ten solar masses, loss through stellar winds begins to have a major impact on the evolution of a star. The upper limit of 100 solar masses is derived from observations. Significant progress has now been achieved in massive star research. New models, along with high quality observations, have improved our understanding of the formation, structure, atmosphere, and evolution of these massive objects. They are formed in violent bursts of star formation and are probably related to the phenomena observed in active galactic nuclei. The workshop at the Space Telescope Science Institute examined the interplay between the astrophysics of massive stars and their location in extragalactic starburst regions. There are eighteen chapters by leading researchers. Each has been carefully edited to ensure that the book is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and observation of massive stars in starburst regions.
New Light on Galaxy Evolution

Baryonic Dark Matter
The visible universe is a small perturbation on the material universe. Zwicky and Sinclair Smith in the 1930s gave evidence of invisible mass in the Coma and Virgo Clusters of Galaxies. Better optical data has only served to confound their critics and the X-ray data confirms that the gravitational potentials are many times larger than those predicted on the basis of the observed stars. Dynamical analyses of individual galaxies have found that significant extra mass is needed to explain their rotational velocities. On much larger scales, tens of megaparsecs, there is suggestive evidence that there is even more mass per unit luminosity. What is this non-luminous stuff of which the universe is made'? How much of it is there? Need there be only one kind of stuff? There are three basic possi bili ties:- all of it is ordinary (baryonic) matter, all of it is some other kind of (non-baryonic) matter, or some of it is baryonic and some is non-baryonic.

In recent years, the cross-section between fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology has been increasing, both at the theoretical and experimental levels: particle physics experiments, astronomical observations, space satellite data. Such interplay fruitfully influenced research activity setting up Astrofundamental physics.Topics covered both theory and observations, and allowed for different approaches and different lines of research. Topics included are: dark matter, neutrinos in astrophysics, gamma-ray astrophysics, and a section devoted to gravity, cosmology and strings. Each of these topics has matter enough to constitute a course on its own. The interrelation between these topics is important and a source of problems at the frontiers of present knowledge and experimental limits. Latest available data are constraining theory and models in these topics. These lecture notes provide an occasion to review achievements, to confront theory and models with observations and among themselves, to exchange information on the latest developments and to discuss future prospects.
