This work is a metaphysical investigation, a study of the nature of evil, the modes in which it finds expression, and its relation to cause, as revealed in the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas. Although the problem of evil is one of the most urgent and vital questions of our time and Thomistic philosophy indicates the most satisfactory answer, the apologetic possibilities of the subject have been subordinated to its metaphysical aspects. Essence and Necessity
This monograph is a critical and historical account of Aristotelian essentialism and modal logic. In Chapter One, ancient and contemporary interpretations and claims of inconsistency in Aristotle’s modal syllogistic are examined. A more consistent model is developed through attention to Aristotle’s comments on negation. In Chapter Two, proofs for each of the mixed apodictic syllogisms are analyzed and diagrammed. Chapter Three explores how Aristotle’s modal metaphysics fits within the context of the Posterior Analytics. Chapter Four contrasts Aristotelian modal logic to contemporary modal metaphysics and argues for ways in which a return to Aristotle may spark intriguing thought in contemporary discussions of the philosophy of science and in debate over the metaphysics of identity.

“Mirabilis Dubitatio”
Amid the so-called “crisis of metaphysics” of the last several hundred years, philosophers in the 20th century re-encountered – and began a reappreciation of – the mediaeval thought of Thomas Aquinas. This crisis can be traced, at least in part, to modern Western philosophy’s rejection of a specifying or “formal” cause in metaphysical analysis. Drawing from Aristotle of Stagira, Aquinas placed the formal cause on prominent display as the foundation for his metaphysics of esse. Yet nowhere did St. Thomas offer a systematic presentation of the key elements for this central doctrine. In response to this absence, Mirabilis dubitatio presents the reader with the doctrine’s fundamental passages gleaned from Aquinas’s entire opera omnia, as well as a systematic analysis of the doctrine which Aquinas himself called, a topic of “wondrous difficulty”. Kaiser’s work argues this central feature of Aquinas’s thought – the formal cause – must be reintegrated into any metaphysical analysis in the 21st century. Such a reintegration can only begin through a presentation and understanding of Aquinas’s coherent account as presented here.
Trees Outside Forests
Trees outside forests (including fruit trees, trees in parks, fields, those growing in the wild and as amenities), together with forests and other woodlands, contribute to the structure of the landscape, generate numerous environmental and social services, and yield important food, drink and fuel products as well as meeting other domestic needs of urban and rural populations. However, trees outside forests are not well documented and receive little attention in the formulation of national forestry policy and planning. This publication seeks to fill this gap, by providing information on the role of these resources and options for their integration in territorial management policies.
