"Your pleasure is my pleasure, Miss Fairhurst." Sir Ragnor Withersby to Miss Judith Fairhurst, in a cupboard, the British Museum, London 1817A skill at cards is not usually part of a young lady's repertoire. An astounding skill at piquet? Unheard of. Yet here's Miss Judith Fairhurst, a natural at the game, facing renowned expert Sir Ragnor Withersby across the table-and thoroughly defeating him. Their first hand arouses his interest, their first kiss arouses a lot more, and elegant man-about-town Sir Ragnor is about to find out what it's like to tumble headfirst off a dangerous cliff into unknown waters. There will be gambling, of course. Potential scandals, cheats and revelations will abound. There will be new friends, sculptures, a strange decanter of brandy and a very nice bottom. Perhaps Fate has set their feet on a path to pleasure, but not all their steps will be smooth. Some games must be very carefully played...

Designs of a Gentleman

Presenting the prequels to the well-received Philip Devalle series, Designs of a Gentleman: The Early Years and The Darker Years introduce the adventurous character we know and love right back at the beginning! The Darker Years - Tensions are running high in King Charles II’s court when Philip Devalle returns to England after spending four years in France. He finds the devious Earl of Shaftesbury attempting to seize power by plotting to make the Duke of Monmouth, Charles’ illegitimate son, the heir to the throne in place of his Catholic uncle, James. He enlists Philip’s help in the enterprise but as he gets drawn deeper into the web of intrigue, Philip finds his very life is in jeopardy. He has never run from danger but as he grows more and more involved in what has become known as the Popish Plot he begins to question whether the cause for which he fights is truly worthy of his talents or his honour – or his life.

Challenging the State

Challenging the State

The 1980s and 1990s posed great challenges to governments in Latin America and Africa. Deep economic crises and significantly heightened pressure for political reform severely taxed their capacity to manage economic and political tasks. These crises pointed to an intense need to reform the state and redefine its relationship to the market and civic society. This book examines the paradox of states that have been weakened by crisis just as their capacity to encourage economic development and provide for effective governance most needs to be strengthened. Case studies of Mexico and Kenya allow the author to analyse the opportunities available for political leadership in moments of crisis, and the constraints on action provided by leadership goals and existing political and economic structures. She argues that while leaders and political structures are often part of the problem, they can also be part of the solution in building more efficient, effective, and responsive states.
