Difficult Places
Memorial Landscapes: a Difficult, an International, a German Issue Designing memorials as open spaces, as opposed to buildings with defined functions, is one of the most complex and precarious tasks in the built environment. In Germany there are many such difficult places and the practice of sinai landscape architects have an impressive record of designing them, dealing with the questions and demands they involve, as well as the processes leading to potential solutions. Examples include the cemetery for the victims of the March Revolution of 1848; the open spaces of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp memorial site and of three other former National Socialist sites; Platz des 9. November 1989, the place of the first Berlin Wall opening on November 9, 1989; and the site of the last full remains of the Berlin Wall, where fifty years after its construction the Berlin Wall Memorial was built. The projects are documented and presented to a broad audience in the landscape architect's plans, photos by Klemens Ortmeyer, texts by Thies Schröder, and a comprehensive essay by the world-renowned expert in the field, Peter Reichel.
Mobile Spaces
Transportable, robust, quick to assemble and dismantle, easy to repair and recycle, and usable in different climatic regions-this is what was required of the pavilions that Markus Heinsdorff designed for the presentation of Germany in India 2011-13 (steel and membrane) and the presentation of Germany in China 2007- 10 (bamboo and membrane). The textile buildings were used as mobile exhibition, conference, concert, and event venues and toured through a total of ten megacities. As building objects, they also represented the "construction and urbanization themes" of the events. The highly innovative structures of the pavilions, which were mostly developed in cooperation with the structural engineers schlaich, bergermann und partner, and the novel textile materials, as well as their exceptional esthetic qualities, make the multifunctional light buildings pioneering prototypes of a new generation of textile building. Using photographs and plans, Mobile Spaces presents the various types of pavilion, as well as further experiments with universities and engineers on the subject of "environmental membranes" and statics in extreme lightweight construction.

The Patient Room
The patient room is the smallest cell of the hospital organism. Its layout determines the structure of the ward and is therefore a decisive factor for the entire building. Many requirements have to be met. The patient's sense of well-being can be positively influenced by the design: homely materials, an attractive view and sufficient privacy are important objectives. Equally important are the working conditions for the staff, especially short distances and an efficient care routine. Finally, even the risk of infection can be reduced by a conscientiously planned room layout.
