Seaweeds of Britain and Ireland

The cool temperate waters of the British and Irish seas contain an astonishing 6% of the world’s algal species, more than 600 different seaweeds, and yet most divers, snorkellers and rockpoolers can put names to only a handful of them. The first edition of Seaweeds of Britain and Ireland has proved invaluable to an enormous number of people, not just volunteer Seasearch divers and snorkellers, and this eagerly awaited second edition will no doubt prove to be equally as popular. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the wonderful marine environment around Britain and Ireland, and improve identification of the wealth of seaweeds so often overlooked. Features of the new edition i...

Acting as titans in global control of the biosphere and colonizing virtually all corners of the earth, algae, extremely diverse and numerous oxygenic, photosynthetic organisms, can be major players in and drivers of environmental change. For hundreds of years, since their evolutionary origins by endosymbiosis, when a protozoan enslaved a cyanobacte

Like its predecessors, this volume provides a benchmark of progress in all fields of applied seaweed science and management, and will be referred to for many years to come.

The synthesis of many years' research carried out by members of the British Phycological Society in collaboration with The Natural History Museum, this is the eighth in a series of books being published under this title covering all the British and the majority of the northern Atlantic seaweeds. This volume is stylistically similar to earlier titles in the series and is written by leading authorities in red algae. The sub-class and all orders, families, genera and species are described, notes on ecology and distribution given, and each named species is illustrated by one or more half-tones showing distinctive features. User-friendly keys are provided to enable identification of genera and species. Special features of this volume are the comprehensive introduction and complete re-evaluation of the British Isles taxa of the sub-class, including a revision of the species of Porphyra.

Poverty Law, Policy, and Practice

The book includes academic debates about the nature and causes of poverty as well as various texts that help illuminate the struggles faced by poor people. Throughout, it contains reading selections highlighting different perspectives on whether poverty is primarily caused by individual actions, structural constraints, or a mix of both. Readers will come away from the book with both a sense of the l...

The young Reginald Stanley had joined the Cambridgeshire Regiment before the First World War. By the time this territorial unit arrived on the battlefield, he was a sergeant. He went to war with his military equipment but also with a sharp mind, a notebook and most remarkable of all, a camera amongst his kit. Many would record their stories in diaries and letters home but few managed to take photos to add to the written record - because the army forbade them to do so. He fought with distinction and determination in the Ypres salient in 1915 but was invalided out of the Cambridgeshires. Back home he felt out of place and determined to be back with his comrades - not for king and country, but because he felt he must be alongside his fellow man, his friends and colleagues. The diary and pictures tell the story of his time with the Cambridgeshires and then with the Army Ordnance Corps.
