Urban Elite Culture
Medieval towns were vibrant and complex social environments where diverse groups and lifestyles encountered and influenced each other. Surprisingly, in the study of urban archaeology, the aristocracy, one of the leading and most influential groups in medieval society, has so far been neglected. This book puts "aristocracy in towns" on the archaeological research agenda. The interdisciplinary and comparative study explores the significance and representation of aristocrats and their interaction with civic elites in sea-trading towns of the southwestern Baltic from the 12th to the 14th centuries. Essentially, however, the analysis of urban elite culture leads to discussion of a much more fundamental issue: the informative value of material culture for the investigation of social conditions. The book provides new archaeological approaches to the study of social differentiation in towns, and contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexity of urban social structures.

Angels, Devils
Supernatural phenomena and causalities played an important role in medieval society. Religious practice was relying upon a set of cult images and the sacral status of these depictions of divine or supernatural persons became the object of heated debates and provoked iconoclastic reactions.The miraculous intervention of saints or other divine agents, the wondrous realities beyond understanding, or the manifestations of magic attributed to diabolic forces, were contained by a variety of discourses, described and discussed in religion, philosophy, chronicles, literature and fiction, and also in a large number of pictures and material objects. The nine essays in this collection discusses how supernatural phenomena – especially angels and devils – found visual manifestation in Latin and Eastern Christianity as well as Judaism in the late medieval, early renaissance period.
Eisenverhüttung im Dürsteltal
In den Jahren 1995 bis 1997 wurden nahe dem Kloster Schöntal zwei mittelalterliche Öfen freigelegt, in denen man Eisenerz verhüttete. Die ältere Anlage, die vielleicht noch aus dem 12. Jahrhundert stammt, diente wahlweise der Produktion von direkt schmiedbarem Eisen, hauptsächlich aber eines Gusseisens, das erst in einem zweiten Arbeitsschritt schmiedbar gemacht wurde. Die andere Anlage ist hingegen eindeutig ein Hochofen, der ausschliesslich in diesem zweiten, indirekten Verfahren Eisen produzierte. Er stammt wohl aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und gehört damit zu den ältesten Belegen dieses Typs in Europa. Das Buch legt die Funde der beiden Öfen und der zugehörigen Arbeitseinrichtungen vor und wertet das gesamte Material aus. Grosse Mengen an Eisenschlacken geben zudem Einblick in die Eisengewinnung und -verarbeitung in einer Zeit des technologischen Umbruchs.
Das Kloster Schöntal bei Langenbruck
Das idyllisch in einem Seitental nördlich von Langenbruck gelegene Schöntal ist das älteste Kloster des Kantons Basel-Landschaft. Die Gründung der Grafen von Frohburg wird 1145 erstmals erwähnt. 1187 war der Bau der heute noch weitgehend erhaltenen Kirche mit ihrem bemerkenswerten Skulpturenschmuck vollendet. Anhand der archäologischen und bauhistorischen Befunde zeichnet die Autorin die Geschichte der Klosteranlage nach: von den Anfängen als Doppelkloster für Mönche und Nonnen des Benediktinerordens über die Zeit der Serviten bis hin zur Umnutzung nach der Reformation – erst als Sennhof des Basler Bürgerspitals und schliesslich als privater Landsitz. Diese erste archäologische Bestandsaufnahme wirft ein neues Licht auf eine der wichtigsten Kulturerbestätten der Region. Die Autorin bezieht sämtliche verfügbare Quellen ein, ergänzt um Expertisen zum plastischen Dekor der Kirchenfassade, zu den Wandmalereifragmenten, zum Fundmaterial und zu den Bestattungen. Dieser umfassende Blick ermöglicht zahlreiche neue Erkenntnisse – der Band wird so zur Referenz für zukünftige Forschungen.
