Laser-Induced Materials and Processes for Rapid Prototyping

The term rapid prototyping (RP) refers to a generic group of emerging technologies that enable very quick fabrication of engineering components primarily targeted for prototyping applications. With RP, very complex three dimensional parts or prototypes can be fabricated without the need of costly tooling and machining. This inevitably leads to much shorter design cycle time and lower cost of building a prototype. Its manifold benefits include significant productivity gains, cost saving, and shortened development time to introduce concept models. As such, RP technologies have attracted tremendous R&D interests from both academia and industry in the past decade. Many different processes and materials have been commercialized and used in industry primarily for the fabrication of physical prototypes. More recent interests in RP technologies are towards functional applications of the fabricated parts, such as in rapid tooling applications and replacements of damaged components. Many processes and materials have been commercialized but are yet to be able to fulfill the aforementioned functional requirements because of limited mechanical strengths of the fabricated parts.

An Advanced Treatise on Fixture Design and Planning

Fixtures are an essential part of manufacturing production. This book covers computer-aided fixture design, fixture clamping synthesis and optimisation, workpiece-fixture interaction, intelligent fixture designed to integrate with processing equipment or machine tools so as to improve productivity and product quality, Internet-enabled fixture design and modular fixture database management. These are the emerging issues central to the development of computer-integrated manufacturing.Covering the established knowledge of fixture design automation and the niche areas of fixture system integration and Internet-enabled design, the book would be a prevalent reference for academics, manufacturing & industrial engineers, and a valuable text for engineering graduate students.

Computer Applications in Near Net-Shape Operations

The process of producing components to final net-shapes is fast becoming a desirable goal for metal working industries. This is due to a combination of factors such as the development of new materials and escalating energy costs. This book addresses the design, analysis and simulation of near net-shape operations using some of the most advanced computer techniques and tools available. Topics covered include: sheet metal forming operations: progressive stamping, fine blanking, nesting, flat pattering, bending and nibbling; die design, construction and NC programming of wire EDM; bulk metal forming processes such as cold upsetting and close-die forging; injection mould design, analysis and simulation; computer-aided design of CNC machines for near net-shape operations; and intelligent progressive die design system IPD. This collection of the latest developments from experts in the field should be of interest to practising engineers, graduate students and researchers of metal forming, stamping, mould and die design.

Inkjet Based 3D Additive Manufacturing of Metals

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a highly promising rapid manufacturing process. Based on incremental layer-upon-layer deposits, three dimensional components of high geometrical complexity can be produced; applications ranging from aerospace and automotive to biomedical industries. Laser, electron beam and wire-based techniques are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on 3D inkjet printing of metals, which is reviewed here in great depth and for the first time. This is an ambient temperature technology which offers some unique advantages for printing metals and alloys, as well as composite and functionally graded materials. Material selection guidelines are presented and the various deposit...
