By presenting state-of-the-art results in logical reasoning and formal methods in the context of artificial intelligence and AI applications, this book commemorates the 60th birthday of Jörg H. Siekmann. The 30 revised reviewed papers are written by former and current students and colleagues of Jörg Siekmann; also included is an appraisal of the scientific career of Jörg Siekmann entitled "A Portrait of a Scientist: Logics, AI, and Politics." The papers are organized in four parts on logic and deduction, applications of logic, formal methods and security, and agents and planning.

Term Rewriting and All That

Term Rewriting and All That

This textbook offers a unified and self-contained introduction to the field of term rewriting. It covers all the basic material (abstract reduction systems, termination, confluence, completion, and combination problems), but also some important and closely connected subjects: universal algebra, unification theory, Gröbner bases and Buchberger's algorithm. The main algorithms are presented both informally and as programs in the functional language Standard ML (an appendix contains a quick and easy introduction to ML). Certain crucial algorithms like unification and congruence closure are covered in more depth and Pascal programs are developed. The book contains many examples and over 170 exercises. This text is also an ideal reference book for professional researchers: results that have been spread over many conference and journal articles are collected together in a unified notation, proofs of almost all theorems are provided, and each chapter closes with a guide to the literature.

Theory Reasoning in Connection Calculi

Theory Reasoning in Connection Calculi

The ability to draw inferences is a central operation in any artificial intelligence system. Automated reasoning is therefore among the traditional disciplines in AI. Theory reasoning is about techniques for combining automated reasoning systems with specialized and efficient modules for handling domain knowledge called background reasoners. Connection methods have proved to be a good choice for implementing high-speed automated reasoning systems. They are the starting point in this monograph,in which several theory reasoning versions are defined and related to each other. A major contribution of the book is a new technique of linear completion allowing for the automatic construction of background reasoners from a wide range of axiomatically given theories. The emphasis is on theoretical investigations, but implementation techniques based on Prolog are also covered.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 25th International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability, and Security, SAFECOMP 2006. The 32 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 101 submissions. Topical sections include systems of systems, security and survivability analysis, nuclear safety and application of standards, formal approaches, networks dependability, coping with change and mobility, safety analysis and assessment, 6th FP integrated project DECOS, and modelling.

Graph Grammars and Their Application to Computer Science

This book describes the functional properties and the structural organization of the members of the thrombospondin gene family. These proteins comprise a family of extracellular calcium binding proteins that modulate cellular adhesion, migration and proliferation. Thrombospondin-1 has been shown to function during angiogenesis, wound healing and tumor cell metastasis.

This volume contains the contributions presented at the International Workshop on Current Trends in Applied Formal Methods organized October 7-9, 1998, in Boppard, Germany. The main objective of the workshop was to draw a map of the key issues facing the practical application of formal methods in industry. This appears to be particularly timely with safety and security issues becoming a real obstacle to industrial software and hardware development. As a consequence, almost all major companies have now set up departments or groups to work with formal methods and many European countries face a severe labour shortage in this new field. Tony Hoare's prediction of the art of software (and hardwar...

Formal Methods for Software Engineering

Formal Methods for Software Engineering

Software programs are formal entities with precise meanings independent of their programmers, so the transition from ideas to programs necessarily involves a formalisation at some point. The first part of this graduate-level introduction to formal methods develops an understanding of what constitutes formal methods and what their place is in Software Engineering. It also introduces logics as languages to describe reasoning and the process algebra CSP as a language to represent behaviours. The second part offers specification and testing methods for formal development of software, based on the modelling languages CASL and UML. The third part takes the reader into the application domains of no...

Verification of Sequential and Concurrent Programs

HIS BOOK CONTAINS a most comprehensive text that presents syntax-directed and compositional methods for the formal veri?- T cation of programs. The approach is not language-bounded in the sense that it covers a large variety of programming models and features that appear in most modern programming languages. It covers the classes of - quential and parallel, deterministic and non-deterministic, distributed and object-oriented programs. For each of the classes it presents the various c- teria of correctness that are relevant for these classes, such as interference freedom, deadlock freedom, and appropriate notions of liveness for parallel programs. Also, special proof rules appropriate for eac...
