In 1948 Paul Karrer and Ernst Jucker compiled the first comprehensive book on the topic of carotenoids. Their work included a list of 65 natural carotenoids with known and unknown structures. In Otto Isler's 'Carotenoids' which appeared in 1971, Otto Straub published a new and expanded 'List of Natural Carotenoids' comprised of 273 compounds and included all the literature data known at the time. This list proved to be of such value to those working in the field of carote noids that 5 years later Otto Straub came out with an up dated version ofthelist entitled 'Key to Carotenoids'. The present second edition of 'Key to Carotenoids' endeavors to provide the reader with the continuation of Straub's work. I would like to thank my collaborators for their work and especially Birkhäuser Verlag, Basle, for their support. H.P. Origins

In this book forty eminent scientists examine the astrobiological origins of life and the emergence of biodiversity in extreme environments. The coverage includes extremophiles: microbes living in hostile conditions of high temperature, psychrophilic, UV radiation, and halophilic environments. Also discussed are the origin and history of Martian water, and the possible biogeochemistry inside Titan.

The Influence of Genetics on Contemporary Thinking

This interdisciplinary volume reflects on the effects of recent discoveries in genetics on a broad range of scientific fields. It shows the way in which those discoveries influence genetics itself and many other fields, and explains the impact of genetics on contemporary culture. The volume contains the most recent views of the Nobel Laureate François Jacob on genetics and the nature of living things.

The series Structure and Bonding publishes critical reviews on topics of research concerned with chemical structure and bonding. The scope of the series spans the entire Periodic Table and addresses structure and bonding issues associated with all of the elements. It also focuses attention on new and developing areas of modern structural and theoretical chemistry such as nanostructures, molecular electronics, designed molecular solids, surfaces, metal clusters and supramolecular structures. Physical and spectroscopic techniques used to determine, examine and model structures fall within the purview of Structure and Bonding to the extent that the focus is on the scientific results obtained an...

Sigma Receptors: Their Role in Disease and as Therapeutic Targets

Originally confused with opioid receptors and then orphan receptors with no biological function, Sigma Receptors are now recognized as relevant to many degenerative diseases with remarkable potential as therapeutic targets. In this text, new information about the structure of sigma 1 receptor, its binding sites are provided as well as its expression in many cell types. It’s putative role in degenerative neuronal diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, pain, drug addiction and locomotor activity. Their roles in possible treatments for blinding retinal diseases emphasize the tremendous far-reaching potential for ligands for these receptors. Exciting breakthroughs in this dynamic field in the last decade are reported herein, which will guide future investigators in determining the full potential of this unique, yet abundantly expressed protein.
