Let's Speak Hawaiian is a comprehensive Hawaiian language course intended for use at the secondary school and college levels. In this second edition the text continues to answer the need for new methods and materials in language instruction and presents extensive research on the Hawaiian language. It is composed almost entirely of material that has been tested in classroom situations; it employs the aural-oral method and emphasizes the development of conversational skills through dialogues and drills. Hawaiian and English texts are on separate pages to aid in rendering the student's first language inoperative. These methods, together with memorization and drill, will help the student more readily to achieve fluency in Hawaiian, unhampered by English. The text includes directed responses, questions and answers, short narratives, pattern practice, conversations, and material for practice in tenses, sentence expansion, and comparative forms. Hawaiian Surfing
Hawaiian Surfing is a history of the traditional sport narrated primarily by native Hawaiians who wrote for the Hawaiian-language newspapers of the 1800s. An introductory section covers traditional surfing, including descriptions of the six Hawaiian surf-riding sports (surfing, bodysurfing, canoe surfing, body boarding, skimming, and river surfing). This is followed by an exhaustive Hawaiian-English dictionary of surfing terms and references from Hawaiian-language publications and a special section of Waikiki place names related to traditional surfing. The information in each of these sections is supported by passages in Hawaiian, followed by English translations. The work concludes with a glossary of English-Hawaiian surfing terms and an index of proper names, place names, and surf spots.
Kanaka ‘Ōiwi Methodologies
For many new indigenous scholars, the start of academic research can be an experience rife with conflict in many dimensions. The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai
The Laieikawai is a Hawaiian romance which recounts the wooing of a native chiefess of high rank and her final deification among the gods.
