This book recounts the stories of nine ordinary people. In an instant their lives changed forever. These are their stories of how resilience and courage helped them find a way forward. Through their stories, the concept of resilience and courage are explored. Each story is unique and how their resilience and courage emerged is equally unique. Experts in the field of reliance and grit talk about key factors that support a resilient nature. Having a good circle of friends, having a purpose in life, and understanding yourself are just a few. I learned that a sense of humour was also critical. Each person described at least one moment when laughter eased the sadness. And for a couple of my storytellers, belief in a higher power was essential. How and when these elements surfaced was different for each person. Being resilient reminded them that despite that tragic instant, their lives were worth living and they would find a path forward where the sun would shine again. Loss touches all of us. Resilience and courage are what get us through. As you read the stories in this book, you will be reminded of how strong you are—how in the face of loss, you found a way forward.

Since the last edition of this book, major advances have been made in our understanding of key pathways that control tumor progression. This has led to the development of new anticancer agents that have the ability to block the activity of proteins involved in neoplastic cell development and proliferation. This book covers various aspects of cancer chemoprevention, including an overview of chemoprevention in the process of tumorigenesis; the roles of various phytochemicals, functional foods, and dietary interventions in disease prevention; and techniques such as cancer stem cell targeting, nano-formulations, and so forth. The nutrigenomic and epigenetic effects of natural products at the molecular and genetic levels are also covered alongside their potential for additive and synergistic effect, as well as overcoming drug resistance. The key selling features of the book are as follows: Discusses holistic and comprehensive areas of chemoprevention Includes diverse techniques, such as cancer stem...

Technologies for Global Health

Collaboration between The Lancet and Imperial College London, UK, has resulted in a new Commission, which examines how medical technology should best be used to improve health in low- and middle-income countries. The report concludes that in many cases, medical technology—almost exclusively developed in rich countries—is simply inappropriate for use in poorer nations.

The Lancet: Stillbirths

Around 2·6 million stillbirths (the death of a baby at 28 weeks’ gestation or more) occur each year. Although 98% of these deaths take place in low-income and middle-income countries, stillbirths also continue to affect wealthier nations, with around 1 in every 300 babies stillborn in high-income countries. This book highlights the rates and causes of stillbirth globally, explores cost-effective interventions to prevent stillbirths (as well as maternal and neonatal deaths), and sets key actions to halve stillbirth rates by 2020. Also included are Comments from professional organisations and parent groups, the latter demonstrating the unique tragedy for families of the birth of a baby bearing no signs of life. This research was launched in London, New York, Hobart, Geneva, New Delhi, Florence, and Cape Town on April 14, 2011.

Women in Breast Cancer: 2022, volume II

We are delighted to present the Frontiers in Oncology "Women in Breast Cancer” Volume II series of article collections. At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers.

Pharmacogenomics is one of the emerging approaches to precision medicine, tailoring drug selection and dosing to the patient’s genetic features. In recent years, several pharmacogenetic guidelines have been published by international scientific consortia, but the uptake in clinical practice is still poor. Many coordinated international efforts are ongoing in order to overcome the existing barriers to pharmacogenomic implementation. On the other hand, existing validated pharmacogenomic markers can explain only a minor part of the observed clinical variability in the therapeutic outcome. New investigational approaches are warranted, including a study of the pharmacogenomic role of the immune...
