Contemporary security policy is no longer a matter of protecting borders or fighting an identified foreign enemy. With counterterrorism high on the security agenda, private citizens and companies have all come to be seen as central to the aim of providing security. Situated within the debate on terrorism risk and security, Corporate Risk and National Security Redefined offers a detailed analysis of the role of private companies in American and Danish counter-terrorism policies. The book shows that a ‘responsibilization strategy’ is central to both the American and Danish security policy – a strategy which tends to portray security as a ‘duty’ rather than the ‘right’ that it tra...

Language and Culture

The book presents a new theory of the relationship between language and culture in a transnational and global perspective. The fundamental view is that languages spread across cultures, and cultures spread across languages, or in other words, that linguistic and cultural practices flow through social networks in the world along partially different paths and across national structures and communities.

Our other grandfather Laurits Peder Lund was born in Ribe, Demark and immigrated with his parents in 1880 where the family settled in Butler County, Iowa. He was ordained to the office of the Holy Ministry on a call from congregations at Luverne, Jasper, and Kenneth, Minnesota. So starts the Lund and Ohs genealogies family histories. She kept the photo at her side for months. A picture of a 4-year old blonde & ribboned girl wearing a pleated skirt & a sweater & clutching a stuffed lamb. The picture was karne in 1946. Karne often looked long & hard at the girl, wondering who she was. What wounds kept her from childhood. Why the child as an adult turned to alcoholism. "Sadness is a theme that has always been in my life, but I never understood why. As the trauma of sexual abuse surfaced, karne came to understand that the little girl of her childhood still lived within her, although injured & afraid. Thus began the painful process of re-connecting with her inner child, Karen. "I wanted to reach out gently so I wrote poetry to her. I wanted to show what happens AFTER abuse. There aren't enough personal voices about this...you can come to terms." Told in poetic form & illustrated by the author's photography, the book chronicles the beginning of discovery, recovery, healing & inner peace.
