Little Peter Crane Mountain Goat is living his best life on Mount Sopris, learning how to survive the harsh environment of mountain life. As he ambitiously conquers his fears by climbing small slopes, his mother encourages him to continue taking risks, even after a near-miss with a mountain lion. When the most revered elder in the herd recognizes a leader in Peter while he is still a kid, he calls on the goat to lead the herd to a new territory. The herd strengthens as warrior goats sharpen their skills alongside Peter, preparing for the passage up Snowmass Mountain where they will claim their new home. As the journey begins, the elder imparts wisdom and continues to guide Peter throughout their quest for a new home. But as danger and challenges loom in the distance, will Peter be able to overcome the perilous environment and face the darkness within himself in order to lead the goats to safety? In this allegory about life, a young mountain goat must lead his herd to a new territory while overcoming adversity.

This book does not contain instructions on how to achieve your spiritual goals nor does it provide “how to” guidelines for your personal growth. This book was born in my heart on 12/31/2017 while driving to a New Year’s Eve ceremony at my local Mindfulness Center. My heart opened-up as I became clear that I am beginning my personal journey of awakening to the reality of life as it is in front of me. The only other details I knew at that time was that I needed to write about my awakening in the present moment to reflect on life as it occurred. The significance of writing about life as it unfolded, is my personal experiment to determine which truth is sustainable for me. The one in my mind, that has been fueled by traditions, belief systems, norms and societal expectations or the reality in front of me.

Constitutional democracy is not just any old form of democracy. It has a peculiar logic and is premised upon some exacting criteria and principles including good laws and institutions predicated on specific fundamental core values and principles. But it is, when fully ingrained in the public sensibility, a sort of civic serum necessary to inoculate free citizens against the ravages of anti-democratic populism, authoritarianism, racism, nativism, discrimination, xenophobia, corruption, self-dealing, and much worse. The need for civic inoculation of that sort is urgent today, globally. The essays in this volume probe the sources and malaise now confronting Constitutional Democracy. However, they go muchfurther. Many of the essays are, indeed, road-maps for a realistic and cultivated response to our present condition. The clues for a rehabilitated democracy are found here analytically but also prescriptively.

Costly and Cute

Scholars have long argued that the developmental state of the human infant at birth is unique. This volume expands that argument, pointing out that many distinctively human characteristics can be traced to the fact that we give birth to infants who are highly dependent on others and who learn how to be human while their brains are experiencing growth unlike that seen in other primates. The contributors to this volume propose that the “helpless infant” has played a role in human evolution equal in importance to those of “man the hunter” and “woman the gatherer.” The authors take a broad look at how human infants are similar to and different from the infants of other species, at how our babies have constrained our evolution over the past six million years, and at how they continue to shape the ways we live today.

Life in the Himalaya

The collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates 50 million years ago created the Himalaya, along with massive glaciers, intensified monsoon, turbulent rivers, and an efflorescence of ecosystems. Today, the Himalaya is at risk of catastrophic loss of life. Maharaj Pandit outlines the mountain’s past in order to map a way toward a sustainable future.

Youth Crime and Violence in the Caribbean

This compilation of works highlights the historical, economic, and human dynamics behind youth offending in the nations of the West Indies. Youth Crime and Violence in the Caribbean offers insights into the slow rate of system change yet leaves readers with an optimistic picture of possibilities. Recent events in Haiti and neighboring Venezuela demonstrate how quickly dynamics in the Caribbean area can shift if crime is not addressed and people increasingly disengage from systems in a manner that allows despots to rise to power. When this happens, the impacts are not localized.

Complex Oxides: An Introduction

Chapter contribution from John B Goodenough, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2019.This book provides a unique look at the chemistry and properties of complex metal oxides from the perspectives of some of the most active researchers on this class of materials. Applications of complex oxide materials are highly varied. Topics reviewed in this volume include solid-state battery research, the chemistry of transparent conductors, ternary uranium oxides, magnetic perovskites, non-linear optical materials, complex molybdenum-vanadium bronzes and other complex materials used in selective oxidation catalysis. It is written to serve as an introduction to the subject for and those beginning to work on these materials, particularly new graduate students.

Psychology in Oceania and the Caribbean

The Caribbean and Oceania are understudied areas from a psychological perspective, and this book is designed to fill that knowledge gap. In addition to diverse, rich cultural traditions and abundant economic opportunity for some, these regions also reflect the challenges of modernity, including crime, poverty, ethnic tensions, adaptations to climate change, and disparities in health, education, and access to care. With contributions from noted psychologists in the Caribbean and Oceania, as well as experts from around the globe, this book provides nuanced examination of significant psychological issues in nations such as Fiji, Guyana, Belize, Haiti, Jamaica, and more.
