The Politics of Institutional Weakness in Latin America

Rather than an unintended by-product of poor state capacity, weak political and legal institutions are often weak by design.

Indigenous Civil Society in Latin America

Over the past decade, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile have been buffeted by intensive transformations. Political scientist Pascal Lupien here reveals how Indigenous political activists responded to these changes as part of their long, ongoing struggles for equal citizenship rights and economic and political power. Such activists are often thought to rely solely on disruptive, large-scale forms of collective action, but Lupien argues that twenty-first-century Indigenous activists have turned toward new modes of fostering Indigenous civil society. Drawing on four years of immersive, community-engaged fieldwork with more than ninety Indigenous organizations and groups within and across three countr...

The Quinoa Bust

"High in the Peruvian altiplano, 13,000 feet above sea level, quinoa's rise to global stardom was pitched as an unparalleled sustainable development opportunity that heralded a brighter future for rural communities devastated by decades of rural-urban migration, civil war, and state neglect. Based in a longitudinal ethnography centered around Puno, Peru, the main quinoa production area in the world's chief quinoa exporting country, The Quinoa Bust traces the social, ecological, technological, and political work that went into transforming a humble Andean grain into a development miracle crop, and highlights that project's unintended consequences. The Quinoa Bust shows how even efforts based in the best of intentions - to counteract the homogenization of global food supply, empower small-scale farmers, revalue local food cultures, and adapt agricultural systems to climate change - can generate new kinds of oppressions. At a time when so-called "forgotten foods" are increasingly positioned as sustainable development tools, The Quinoa Bust offers a cautionary tale of fleeting benefits and ambivalent results"--

Sounding Indigenous explores the relations between music, people, and places through analysis of Bolivian music performances: by a non-governmental organization involved in musical activities, by a music performing ensemble, and by the people living in two rural areas of Potosi. Based on research conducted between 1993 and 1995, the book frames debates of Bolivian national and indigenous identities in terms of different attitudes people assume towards cultural and artistic authenticity. The book makes unique contributions through an emphasis on music as sensory experience, through its theorization of authenticity in relation to music, through its combined focus on different kinds of Bolivian music (indigenous, popular, avant-garde), through its combined focus on music performance and the Bolivian nation, and through its interpretation of local, national, and transnational fieldwork experiences.
