The Biblical Accommodation Debate in Germany
This book redresses a misunderstanding in the history of biblical interpretation. Hoon J. Lee provides the first study of the biblical accommodation debate of the Enlightenment. The heavily contested doctrine spurred numerous biblical scholars, theologians, and philosophers to debate the nature of divine revelation communicated through human words. As biblical accommodation was coupled with historical criticism, the participants in this literary debate fought over the authority, inspiration, and inerrancy of the Bible. Examining the wide range of writing on the doctrine of accommodation, Lee surveys the Dutch discussion of accommodation that leads up to the German debate. In doing so, he provides the historical development of Augustinian and Socinian accommodation.
Poets Laureate in the Holy Roman Empire
Petrarch’s revival of the ancient practice of laureation in 1341 led to the laurel being conferred on poets throughout Europe in the later Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Within the Holy Roman Empire, Maximilian I conferred the title of Imperial Poet Laureate especially frequently, and later it was bestowed with unbridled liberality by Counts Palatine and university rectors too. This handbook identifies more than 1300 poets laureated within the Empire and adjacent territories between 1355 and 1804, giving (wherever possible) a sketch of their lives, a list of their published works, and a note of relevant scholarly literature. The introduction and various indexes provide a detailed account of a now largely forgotten but once significant literary-sociological phenomenon and illuminate literary networks in the Early Modern period. Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ
F.C. Baur’s monumental study Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ (1845) is one of the greatest works of all time on the Apostle to the Gentiles. Laying the basis for modern Pauline scholarship, its three sections in turn thoroughly deconstruct the account of Paul found in Acts, examine the authentic, deuteron-Pauline and Pastoral Epistles, and draw the various strands of Paul’s thought into a cohesive whole. In the first two parts Baur’s historical-critical skills are at their finest, while in the third the influence of Hegel and Schleiermacher can be seen as Baur presents a comprehensive synthesis of Pauline theology. Since the original nineteenth-century English translation of Baur’s masterpiece is no longer adequate, Hodgson and Brown’s new edition will serve as the definitive resource for future scholarship. Hellenistic Dimensions of the Gospel of Matthew
In the search for Matthean theology, scholars overwhelmingly approach the Gospel of Matthew as the "the most Jewish Gospel." Studies of its Sitz im Leben focus on its relationship to Judaism, whether arguing from the perspective that Matthew wrote from a cloistered Jewish community or as the leader of a Gentile rebellion against such a Jewish community. While this is undoubtedly an important and necessary discussion for understanding the Gospel, it often assumes too much about the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism (via Martin Hengel). Robert S. Kinney argues for a hybridized perspective in which Matthew's attention to Jewish sources and ideas is not denied, but in which echoes of Greek and Roman sources can be observed, focusing on identifying Matthew's use of rhetoric and its possible echoes of Greco-Roman philosophical disciple-gathering teachers.
