This book is a collection of Policy Briefs on the issue of reconstructing economic governance in resource-rich African countries. This is the first book that covers this particular issue. Many researches have been undertaken on the causes of conflict and violence in resource-rich African countries, but the particular point in this book is how to manage the economic affairs in these countries for the benefit of the people and on a long-term and sustainable basis. The term good economic governance is used for this type of management, and we have applied the concept to a number of African countries that are richly endowed with natural resources and have suffered from various forms and intensities of conflict.

Macroeconomic Policy Formation in Africa - Country Cases

In addition, the book presents book reviews and book notes. (Series: African Development Perspectives Yearbook - Vol. 17) [Subject: African Studies, Economics]

This seventh volume of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook on "Empowerment and Economic Development in Africa" goes in content beyond Volume 6 in presenting strategies of empowerment and programmes of assistance towards those groups that are important at local and national levels to strengthen governance systems and to make them more responsive to the civil society. The empowerment of selected groups, associations and small industry sectors is therefore an important subject regarding the sustainable development of African countries. It is important to notice that there is an increasing awareness about the topic at international levels and regional levels in Africa. The sustainable social and economic development and empowerment of groups and actors in society and economy is considered to be an increasingly important objective in the context of state reconstruction and peace-building efforts in Africa. The sixth volume of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook on "Good

New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa

This Volume XIV analyses the New Growth and Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Africa. Institutional issues and perspectives in designing new growth and poverty alleviation strategies are considered in various case studies (Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Botswana and Tanzania). Other studies deal with institutional problems of resource-rich countries after conflict (Sudan), and with the institutions to enhance environmental protection parallel with economic growth and poverty reduction (Niger). Further studies deal with institutions to bridge the gap between formal and informal entrepreneurial sectors in Kenya and Tanzania. Local issues and perspectives for designing new growth and poverty alleviat...

This fourth volume of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook gives a comprehensive account of the employment and labour situation in Africa and presents a coherent strategy of employment creation and poverty alleviation. A broad concept of active labour and employment policies for countries in sub-Saharan Africa is followed throughout this volume, emphasising not only the importance of employment-friendly macroeconomic and sectoral policies, but also the necessity of appropriate labour policies with regard to labour institutions, labour relations and labor conditions. In this context the new regional and international demands to redesign structural adjustment policies and development co-operation in order to lay greater emphasis on the employment issue are considered as well. Finally, the potential conflict between employment generation and environmental protection is examined and options for sustainable development policies are discussed.

Macroeconomic Policy Formation in Africa - General Issues

This book examines new macroeconomic policy frameworks for Africa, and it discusses the role of policies for generating sustainable and inclusive growth. Highlighted are the cases of Egypt and Tunisia, and the new strategic and policy frameworks in these countries after the democratic changes. An agenda for comprehensive reforms is presented. Africa's Progress in Regional and Global Economic Integration - Towards Transformative Regional Integration

Based on Africa's deep routed structural problems, the key aspect of a transformative regional integration is how to promote structural transformation by adapted strategies and policies for the African regional economic communities, for the Continental Free Trade Area, and for the Tripartite Free Trade Area. Regional integration in Africa is based on a conventional (linear) model, starting with trade preference zones and moving to free trade areas, customs unions, and monetary and economic zones, with the ultimate goal to reach political unity. Specific problems of a more transformative regional integration agenda are discussed, such as: ?food security and agriculture; industry development, enterprise growth and competition; and economic partnership agreements with extra-regional partners. In the final section, the impact of three global value chains of importance for Africa (diamonds, shea butter, and sesame) are considered on regions, on sub-regions, and on regional integration.
