English Studies from Archives to Prospects
When we think about what it is we do in academic literary studies, we do so taking account of time – the time of the institution in which this disciplinary practice takes place, and the history of the discipline itself. Since literary studies engage contemporary issues and how they impact the reader, we must also acknowledge processes and events outside the field. The contributions to this volume engage with the idea of temporality not only in Anglophone literature studies, but in the humanities as a whole. In the first section, the literary contributions show that the humanities owe a debt to the past – new paradigms question and challenge the validity of older ones without necessarily discarding them. The second section shows how the disciplinary archive can be modified and expanded to engage its present condition, while the last deals with what that condition forebodes. Despite the range of perspectives adopted here, all contributions echo the history of the discipline of literary studies itself, its present condition, and the possibilities for its survival in an age in which the relevance of humanities is being disputed.

A Legacy of Endurance: Memoirs of My Long Life by John Prcela My World War II and especially postwar experiences prompted me to write this book. In the aftermath of WWII, almost my entire Croatian generation was murdered in a long chain of “Death Marches” and extermination camps throughout the then existing Communist Yugoslavia. However, the would-be historians of that period of history have left just the blank pages about my murdered Croatian generation or they have described those victims as murderers! Such travesty of justice and history, prompted me to write this autobiography, although I already wrote several historic books on that horrifying subject. I am a survivor of that peace-time Croatian Holocaust, known as the Bleiburg Tragedy. That is why in these memoirs I want to leave to the future American and Croatian generations my own legacy which I not only lived through so many tragic vicissitudes but also described it in several historic and theological books

This book covers the full story of the Ustasha, a fascist movement in Croatia, from its historic roots to its downfall. The authors address key questions: In what international context did Ustasha terrorism grow and develop? How did this movement rise to power, and then exterminate hundreds of thousands of innocents? Who was Ante Pavelić, its leader? Was he a shrewd politician, able to exploit for his independent project Mussolini's imperial ambitions, Hitler's pan-German aims, and the anti-Bolshevism of the Holy See and the Western bloc? Or was he, consciously or not, a pawn in other hands, in a complex international scenario where Croatia was only arena among many? And after the movement's collapse, how were several of the most prominent Ustasha leaders able to evade capture by Tito’s victorious army? The book places the appearance of the Ustasha movement not only in the context of the interwar Kingdom of Yugoslavia but also in the wider perspective of the emergence of European fascism.
