A Haven from Hitler
This is a story of suffering and heroism, love and hatred, death and survival during the most destructive years of the 20th century in Europe. Originally published in Welsh under the title "e;Yr Erlid"e;, it won the Welsh Book of the Year prize in 2013. It tells the story of the family of Kate Bosse-Griffiths, of German-Jewish descent, who fled the brutal regime of the Nazis and became one of Wales' leading academic and literary figures.
Amarna Studies and Other Selected Papers
A selection of 24 papers by Kate Bosse-Griffiths (1910-1998), curator of the large Egyptian collection in Swansea University's Wellcome Museum. First published between 1955 and 1996, the papers are divided into two sections: material relating to Amarna and material from other eras. The varied contents include discussions of objects and artworks in the Wellcome Museum, including the Shrine of Tiye', beads, stelae, amulets, and a prehistoric stone figure, as well as reviews and more general discussions of Egyptian artwork.
The Jews of Wales
This study considers Welsh Jewry as a geographical whole and is the first to draw extensively on oral history sources, giving a voice back to the history of Welsh Jewry, which has long been a formal history of synagogue functionaries and institutions. The author considers the impact of the Second World War on Wales’s Jewish population, as well as the importance of the Welsh context in shaping the Welsh-Jewish experience. The study offers a detailed examination of the numerical decline of Wales’s Jewish communities throughout the twentieth century, and is also the first to consider the situation of Wales’s Jewish communities in the early twenty-first, arguing that these communities may be significantly fewer in number and smaller than in the past but they are ever evolving.
