Communication is defined as an interaction between at least two living agents which share a repertoire of signs. These are combined according to syntactic, semantic and context-dependent, pragmatic rules in order to coordinate behavior. This volume deals with the important roles of soil bacteria in parasitic and symbiotic interactions with viruses, plants, animals and fungi. Starting with a general overview of the key levels of communication between bacteria, further reviews examine the various aspects of intracellular as well as intercellular biocommunication between soil microorganisms. This includes the various levels of biocommunication between phages and bacteria, between soil algae and bacteria, and between bacteria, fungi and plants in the rhizosphere, the role of plasmids and transposons, horizontal gene transfer, quorum sensing and quorum quenching, bacterial-host cohabitation, phage-mediated genetic exchange and soil viral ecology.
Archaea represent a third domain of life with unique properties not found in the other domains. Archaea actively compete for environmental resources. They perceive themselves and can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’. They process and evaluate available information and then modify their behaviour accordingly. They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realize the optimum variant. These highly diverse competences show us that this is possible owing to sign(aling)- mediated communication processes within archaeal cells (intra-organismic), between the same, related and different archaeal species (interorganismic), and betwee...
The book on Trends in Quorum Sensing and Quorum Quenching: New Perspectives and Applications focuses on the recent advances in the field of quorum sensing in bacteria and the novel strategies developed for quorum sensing inhibition. The topics covered are multidisciplinary and wide-ranging,and includes quorum sensing phenomenon in pathogenic bacteria, food spoilers, and agriculturally relevant bacteria. The applications of quorum sensing inhibitors such as small molecules, bioactives, natural compounds, and quorum quenching enzymes in controlling bacterial infections in clinical settings, agriculture and aquaculture are discussed. The potential use of quorum quenching enzymes for mitigating ...
Born by Mistake shares the collective memoirs of a young girl--a dancer and her father's favorite--in South Africa, a young professional in business of travel agencies--tested and jaded by relationships with men, and of a mature woman--a married spouse and mother of a young boy in Greece. Katherine Pappas begins her journey with a silver spoon in her mouth, only to be changed and challenged when her beloved father dies. In her early adulthood, she faces the problem of forfeiting her dream to be a doctor, and ends up very successful in the travel industry. After a series of accidents, betrayals and the never-ending harsh belittlement from her own mother, she sets off for Greece. There, she meets and marries a man who will give her the gift of a son and the woes of infidelity. Throughout her years, she slowly embraces the truth that no matter how dark and horrid life's events may be, there is still a strong fire within to push on and keep taking in all experiences, one day at a time.
