Work Based Learning in Health Care

This book is about sharing knowledge and practice. It arose from a conference that was hosted by the Work Based Learning and Accreditation Unit of the School of Health and Social Sciences at Middlesex University. We believed that as a Unit and within the University we have the expertise and experience to make a significant contribution to the debates surrounding the development and implementation of work based learning in health care. However, we were also aware that we are by no means alone in this and that excellent work is being developed and practised in many other universities and organisations: and so the idea of the conference as a platform from which to share knowledge and practice w...

Exploring various aspects of social work from an anthropological perspective, this original book uses an ‘outsider’ position to develop a reflexive dialogue with social workers from England and elsewhere in Europe. Bell, an anthropologist, worked alongside social work educators and social workers for many years. She widens our insights into social work by offering thought-provoking examples suggesting how social work practitioners view their occupation and their practice, and how wider society views them. Blending research and personal reflection to critically examine social workers’ preoccupations and contributions to society, the author explores identities and definitions in social work, making this book refreshing reading for academics, researchers, students and practitioners.

Shakespeare and the Eighteenth-Century Novel

Shakespeare and the Eighteenth-Century Novel

The eighteenth century has long been acknowledged as a pivotal period in Shakespeare's reception, transforming a playwright requiring 'improvement' into a national poet whose every word was sacred. Scholars have examined the contribution of performances, adaptations, criticism and editing to this process of transformation, but the crucial role of fiction remains overlooked. Shakespeare and the Eighteenth-Century Novel reveals for the first time the prevalence, and the importance, of fictional characters' direct quotations from Shakespeare. Quoting characters ascribe emotional and moral authority to Shakespeare, redeploy his theatricality, and mock banal uses of his words; by shaping in this way what is considered valuable about Shakespeare, the novel accrues new cultural authority of its own. Shakespeare underwrites, and is underwritten by, the eighteenth-century novel, and this book reveals the lasting implications for both of their reputations.
