Die Beitrage thematisieren die Musikwissenschaft als Feld der Reproduktion des sozialen Geschlechts, geschlechtstypische Unterschiede zwischen Musiklehrern und Musiklehrerinnen, Gender-Aspekte in der Ethnomusikologie, Feminismus und Popkultur, die 'Gute' der Frauen in Gender-Pirouetten, das Verhaltnis von Cultural Studies und Gender Studies und nicht-normative Mannlichkeit im Film.

Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, unter welchen Umständen und mit welchen Auswirkungen junge Mädchen in der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zu den Mitte der 1960er Jahre einsetzenden Reformen in Einrichtungen der Erziehungshilfe eingewiesen worden sind. Dabei liegt das Augenmerk vor allem auf den Umständen, welche zur Einweisung der Mädchen geführt haben, d.h. auf der ‚Diagnostik’, und auf der ‚Fürsorge’, die – mit teilweise brachialen Methoden – die Versittlichung und Verhäuslichung der Mädchen bewirken sollte.

In VISION UND VERFALL analysiert Laßwitz-Preisträger Hans Frey die Science Fiction der DDR. Unterhaltsam und ohne jede Besserwisserei führt er durch eine untergegangene Welt und enthüllt einen weitgehend unbekannten Erzählkosmos. Selbst diejenigen, die schon Kenntnisse haben, werden Überraschungen erleben. Der Autor nähert sich nicht nur dem Kern der DDR-SF, sondern er vermag auch Erstaunliches über ihre Entwicklungsgeschichte zu berichten. Reproduziert eine Diktatur in der Regel stets dieselben Klischees, so kommt der Autor in diesem Fall zu einem anderen, verblüffenden Ergebnis. Statt Stasis entfaltete sich eine von der Obrigkeit ungewollte Evolution. Wie das möglich wurde, wird anhand von Hintergründen, Strukturen, Personen, Werkbeschreibungen, seltenen Illustrationen und einem ausführlichen Literaturverzeichnis spannend belegt. Diese Art der SF, so Frey, hat es nur in der DDR gegeben. Wer an deutscher Literatur interessiert ist, dem erschließt das Buch neue und ungeahnte Erkenntnisse.
