The Languages of Early Medieval Charters
This is the first major study of the interplay between Latin and Germanic vernaculars in early medieval records. Building on previous work on the uses of the written word in the early Middle Ages, which has dispelled the myth that this was an age of ‘orality’, the contributions in this volume bring to the fore the crucial question of language choice in the documentary cultures of early medieval societies. Specifically, they examine the interactions between Latin and Germanic vernaculars in the Anglo-Saxon and eastern Frankish worlds and in neighbouring areas. The chapters are underpinned by an important comparative dimension on account of the two regions’ shared linguistic heritage and numerous cross-Channel links. Catalogue of Sources for a Linguistic Atlas of Early Medieval English
This catalogue is a state-of-knowledge list of the English written between c 1150 and 1300, whether later versions of Old English texts or original early Middle English. With over 500 entries relating to manuscripts containing writing in English, it describes in detail literary material, both prose and verse, documentary texts, and glosses. The catalogue draws together an extensive body of information only available up to now from widely scattered sources. As well as being listed by their repositories, the manuscripts are also separately indexed by text. Information is provided on dates, hands, manuscript associations and language. Also given are references to editions and secondary literature.
Anglo-Saxon Emotions
Research into the emotions is beginning to gain momentum in Anglo-Saxon studies. Denis Janot (fl. 1529-1544), Parisian Printer and Bookseller
Denis Janot is the prime example of a vernacular printer espousing the highest standards of French Renaissance printing, highly influential in the adoption of roman type to the printing of vernacular material, and a key figure in the development of book illustration. This bibliography, a comprehensive revison of the author’s Warwick Ph.D. thesis of 1976, listing 391 editions (41 more than the original version), is based firmly on the description of Janot’s books. Some 1300 copies have been examined, about 80% of the known total. Alongside the bibliography there is an description of Janot’s printing material (including an index of more than 1000 woodcuts), and some analysis of the subjects of his publications.
