Organic vocabulary is a term that describes a child’s inner source of thoughts. Based on the early work of Sylvia Ashton-Warner in New Zealand with Maori children, organic vocabulary can help promote early literacy among children who have little connection and prior experiences with print. This book connects the early research and methodology to today’s classrooms. Locally or individually, STEM programs provide additional opportunities to engage K-12 students, including those from marginalized groups, with the support of STEM outreach organizations through the co-construction and implementation of STEM activities during school, out of school, at home, and in the community. Research suggests that community-engaged partnerships forge relationships that can enhance and sustain K-12 STEM education efforts between K-12 districts and the scholarly community. It can be a life-long and, at times, delicate journey as MotherScholars try to choose between the (often too) many opportunities they have before them.
