This book explores different perspectives on the role, influence and importance of participants in education research. Drawing on a variety of philosophical, theoretical and methodological approaches, the book examines how researchers relate to and with their participants before, during, and after the collection and/or production of data; reimagining the rights of participants, the role/s of participants, the concept/s of "participant" itself.

Navigating the Education Research Maze

This book depicts rigorous and vigorous accounts of strategies used successfully by researchers to negotiate their way through the research maze. The metaphor of the maze evokes several different and sometimes contradictory elements of contemporary education research, including complexity, confusion, messiness, multiplicity and risk. While these are not necessarily or wholly negative attributes, it is important for researchers to be able to articulate and implement effective strategies for engaging wholeheartedly with these situations to navigate the education research maze. The book is structured around three main themes; politics, ethics, philosophies and theories of education research mazes; mazes in and with specific research methods; and mazes in and with specific research tasks and technologies. Each account develops broader lessons for enhancing the impact, quality, relevance and significance of research in other disciplines as well as education.

This compilation focuses on the theory and conceptualisation of statistics and probability in the early years and the development of young children’s (ages 3-10) understanding of data and chance. It provides a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge international research on the development of young learners’ reasoning about data and chance in formal, informal, and non-formal educational contexts. The authors share insights into young children’s statistical and probabilistic reasoning and provide early childhood educators and researchers with a wealth of illustrative examples, suggestions, and practical strategies on how to address the challenges arising from the introduction of statist...

The first OZCOTS conference in 1998 was inspired by papers contributed by Australians to the 5th International Conference on Teaching Statistics. In 2008, as part of the program of one of the first National Senior Teaching Fellowships, the 6th OZCOTS was held in conjunction with the Australian Statistical Conference, with Fellowship keynotes and contributed papers, optional refereeing and proceedings. This venture was so successful that the 7th and 8th OZCOTS were similarly run, conjoined with Australian Statistical Conferences in 2010 and 2012. Authors of papers from these OZCOTS conferences were invited to develop chapters for refereeing and inclusion in this volume. There are sections on ...

Learning and Teaching for Mathematical Literacy

Typically, most people don’t realize when and how they can use the mathematics they were taught in high school – yet many of the mathematical ideas and skills can be a powerful tool for understanding how the world works. Learning and Teaching for Mathematical Literacy addresses this situation, offering practical strategies for developing a broader vision of mathematical literacy in the classroom and recognising the importance of maintaining these skills into adult life. Linked to the material explored throughout this book, classroom activities and lesson materials are freely available for use via the QR codes included in each chapter. Filled with case studies and classroom activities, ch...

Multivariate scaling methods and the reconstruction of social spaces
