Most scientists and engineers are familiar with the name Josef Stefan primarily from the Stefan-Boltzmann law, which relates the amount of energy transferred by radiation to the absolute temperature raised to the fourth power. Stefan determined this law from experimental data, and it was later theoretically verified by his former student, Ludwig Boltzmann. However, it is interesting to know that this is the same Stefan who lent his name to the solid-liquid phase change problem, and concepts related to molecular diffusion and convective motion driven by surface evaporation or ablation. This book presents research results of PowerWeb, TU Delft’s consortium for interdisciplinary research on intelligent, integrated energy systems and their role in markets and institutions. In operation since 2012, it acts as a host and information platform for a growing number of projects, ranging from single PhD student projects up to large integrated and international research programs. The group acts in an inter-faculty fashion and brings together experts from electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, technology and policy management, control engineering, civil engineering, architecture, aerospace engineering, and industrial design. The interdisciplinary projects of PowerWeb are typically associated with either of three problem domains: Grid Technology, Intelligence and Society. PowerWeb is not limited to electricity: it bridges heat, gas, and other types of energy with markets, industrial processes, transport, and the built environment, serving as a singular entry point for industry to the University’s knowledge. Via its Industry Advisory Board, a steady link to business owners, manufacturers, and energy system operators is provided.
This book collects selected contributions presented at the INdAM Workshop "Geometric Challenges in Isogeometric Analysis", held in Rome, Italy on January 27-31, 2020. It gives an overview of the forefront research on splines and their efficient use in isogeometric methods for the discretization of differential problems over complex and trimmed geometries. A variety of research topics in this context are covered, including (i) high-quality spline surfaces on complex and trimmed geometries, (ii) construction and analysis of smooth spline spaces on unstructured meshes, (iii) numerical aspects and benchmarking of isogeometric discretizations on unstructured meshes, meshing strategies and software.
