早年的市集，多半以所販售物品來稱呼，如米市、布市、柴市、魚市⋯⋯等，待市場規模漸漸成形後，為了容易辨識與管理，幾乎在各個縣市的公有市場，都會以第一公有市場、第二公有市場⋯⋯等名稱來命名。 此外，也有以城門東、西、南等周邊位置而命名，如東門市場、南門市場；還有以當地地名與道路名稱來命名，如九份市場、瑞芳市場、建國市場⋯⋯等；另有以俗稱來命名的「兵仔市」（台南永康），這類型的市場多以批發為主，吸引了鄰近的阿兵哥前來採買，久而久之連公車站牌的路標都標示了此俗稱，反而原本的正式名稱就沒什麼人在用了。
