Die chinesische Buchersammlung der Berliner Staatsbibliothek geht bis auf den Grossen Kurfursten zuruck, der 1683 einen ersten Katalog der Sinica drucken liess. Eine bedeutende Vermehrung des Bestandes begann Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, und damit entstand eine der grossen europaischen Sinica-Sammlungen. Dieser Katalog verzeichnet erstmals eine ganze Signaturengruppe, die sog. "Neue Sammlung", die von Herbert Mueller 1912 auf der Basis von Desiderata-Listen zusammengetragen wurde. Grundlage dafur war der Akzessionskatalog der Bibliothek, da ein ansehnlicher Teil des Bestandes heute durch Verlagerung in Krakau liegt bzw. verschollen ist. Uber 2000 Signaturen sind verzeichnet; neben den ublichen bibliographischen Angaben enthalten sie chinesische Zeichen und Standortangaben. Ausfuhrliche Namen-, Titel- und Verlagsregister erschliessen den Band, wahrend eine Einleitung in die Bestandsgeschichte einfuhrt. Der Katalog ermoglicht erstmals einen direkten Zugriff auf diesen wichtigen und durchaus einmaligen Bestand.

Over the course of two centuries, the region of the Middle Niger valley of the Western Sudan was dominated by three successive states: the indigenous Segu Bambara state, the Islamic Umarian state, and the French colonial state.
