Do Conventions Matter?

National leadership conventions in Canada attract widespread public interest but, with growing support for direct democracy and universal voting, they may soon become a thing of the past. In Do Conventions Matter? John Courtney, a leading authority in the field, explores the party leadership selection process in Canada in an age of television-dominated politics and assesses its uncertain future.

Out of the East

What happened to the ruling communist party of East Germany after the collapse of the Berlin Wall? The Left in Germany describes how the communist party's dissolution led to many of its core members founding a new party for a reuinified Germany. Over the last twenty years it has transformed many times, from the Socialist Unity Party to Party of Democratic Socialism to, finally, the successful Left party. Out of the East makes sense of these transitions, and reveals how a pariah party managed to survive and thrive in democracy.

Our Union

The post-war period witnessed dramatic changes in the lives of working-class families. Wages rose, working hours were reduced, pension plans and state social security measures offered greater protection against unemployment, illness, and old age, the standard of living improved, and women and members of immigrant communities entered the labour market in growing numbers. Existing studies of the post-war period have focused above all on unions at the national and international levels, on the "post-war settlement," including the impact of Fordism, and on the chiefly economic issues surrounding collective bargaining, while relatively scant attention has been paid to the role of the union local i...

Manitoba Politics and Government

Manitoba has always been a province in the middle, geographically, economically, and culturally. Lacking Quebec’s cultural distinctiveness, Ontario’s traditional economic dominance, or Alberta’s combustible mix of prairie populism and oil wealth, Manitoba appears to blend into the background of the Canadian family portrait. But Manitoba has a distinct political culture, one that has been overlooked in contemporary political studies. Manitoba Politics and Government brings together the work of political scientists, historians, sociologists, economists, public servants, and journalists to present a comprehensive analysis of the province’s political life and its careful “mutual fund m...

In the decades following the Second World War, autoworkers were at the forefront of the labour movement. Their union urged members to rally in the streets and use the ballot box to effect change for all working-class people. But by the turn of this century, the Canadian Auto Workers union had begun to pursue a more defensive political direction. Shifting Gears traces the evolution of CAW strategy from transformational activism to transactional politics. Class-based collective action and social democratic electoral mobilization gave way to transactional partnerships as relationships between the union, employers, and governments were refashioned. This new approach was maintained when the CAW merged with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union in 2013 to create Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector union. Stephanie Ross and Larry Savage explain how and why the union shifted its political tactics, offering a critical perspective on the current state of working-class politics.

Based primarily on mail surveys of voters, political scientists Stewart (U. of Alberta) and Archer (U. of Calgary) took the opportunity of the 1992 Progressive Conservative, the 1994 NDP, and the 1994 Liberal leadership elections to observe the internal workings of Canadian political parties and the people who stand between the politicians and the electorate. Their study comes in the midst of intense criticism of the delegate conventions that most parties had used to choose leaders, and the shift to a form of universal balloting that allows all party members to vote directly for their leader.
